I am so sorry for the 2,000 young volunteers DOGE just fired, and the communities they would have helped.

It was incredibly humbling and grounding to meet the hurricane survivors and play some small part in their rebuilding stories. I was also so happy to come home. The sight of my home-mountains as we descended toward Seattle made it real. And I am lucky to have someone wonderful to come home to.

I saw pelicans and tiny shells on Tybee Island. This cat sat next to me while I ate fish and chips, and the server told me he's cared for by the restaurant staff and in summer takes naps out on the dunes.

On my Savannah day trips I ate VERY well, met a bookstore cat, and stopped by my partners art school alma mater.

This was the small town I worked in. The work days were so long that I didn't catch much daylight, but I tried to go for walks on my lunch breaks.

The peeled back metal on the roof is characteristic of what happened to the homes of many survivors of Hurricane Helene.

The dancers were part of a beautiful Día de los Muertos celebration smack in the middle of Seatac.

The car was the last one the rental agency had, and I drove it every day for five weeks.

The local cuisine was full of surprises.

The architecture of Savannah is everything I'd heard it would be.
