Another weekend, another beer festival. This time it was to « Stout Sure Meuse » in Namur. Black beers and sours only! In a former church that still very much looks and feels like a church!
A small glass or « gallopin » of black beer with the festival logo of « Stout sure Meuse » in white. In the background people are sitting at tables. There are also two enormous « Géants » from the annual procession. We are clearly in a church. The interior of a church with high arched roof and black and white tiled floor. There are long red tables and a stage set up in the former nave. The lighting is low and the atmosphere somewhere between solemn and cosy.

I just visited the American Book Center in Spui, Amsterdam. Inside feels like being inside a spiral shell but full of huge wooden bookcases. Picked up a book for my train home to Brussels. I choose The Dark Forest by Cixin Lui but the blind date books intrigued me.
Curved shelves winding up the inside of the book shop to the next floor. Customers are browsing. A book is wrapped in brown paper and short pieces of text are stuck to the outside like clues to the book’s identity: Science fiction. Dystopia. Two people on the run. Climate ravaged earth. Androids and artificial humans. There is also a quote: Knowledge is power. But power decides who has access to knowledge. The overlords bought themselves time in which to prepare for their strategic withdrawal.

It’s 7am and still dark. Multiple fires on Place de l’Yser, bright orange flames and huge plumes of black smoke. Traffic barriers and material from the construction site have been dragged across the ring road to block traffic.

I went to Liège for the opera (which was very good) but I’m mostly excited about my first trip on the TRAMS, which came into service earlier this year.

An exciting day, in which I may have become legally Belgian and also about to Meet the Author: in this case Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, at Bozar.
Am I Belgian yet? I am posing in my bright yellow winter jacket, under the street sign for Rue de la Cigogne/ Ooievaarstraat in Brussels. Above the official street sign, is a mosaic stork carrying a bundle in the colours of the Belgian flag.

Spotted while strolling in my neighbourhood. Peak Brussels.
A large, plastic, orange and grey urinal, of the type found at outdoor events, seemingly left behind by the side of the bassin at St Catherine, Brussels. Strings of red and white incident tape may be intended to discourage its use. Neither the people sitting at the edge of the water, nor the giant yellow ducks seem to have noticed it yet.

All very Belge, right down to the chorus of « Waar is de feestje? » down the front, a group of v excited Charlotte Cardin fans and a few bemused tourists. Not to mention the baffling signage.
The Brussels Hôtel de Ville lit up in red, behind an open air stage and a crowd of concert goers. 17th century buildings in the Grand’ Place, Brussels, one of which has the details of its facade lit up in red, yellow, green and lilac. A stop sign and a sign reading « sold out » at the exit to a free, unticketed event. Très Belge.

How it started. How it’s going.
