"Being in Shadow and Light: Academics in Post/Conflict Higher Education is a powerful but troubling volume that highlights the gendered experiences, subjectivities, (re)tellings and withholdings, and the place of memory of academics and scholars in countries and contexts as far apart as Colombia and Sri Lanka, with many stops along the way, including through the UK, Nigeria, South Africa and Palestine. The common elements are those of conflict in its different sites and forms that also challenge the possibilities for academic freedom on which scholarly work and expression are hinged, and the resulting responsibilities and accountabilities of scholars to themselves, their colleagues and families, and to the societies in which they are located. The search for truth and reparation/reconciliation, for repair and rebuilding of trust in post-conflict societies and institutions also reveal the complexities, complicities and resistances that confront such efforts, including uncomfortable discoveries about close kin and associates and their participation in atrocities, silencing and repression of scholars."
