This is a great Revacholian way of putting it. I’ve played games where I didn’t feel an affinity to the gameplay or even story, leaving the codex databases mostly unread. My memories consist of me interacting with the world, standing on precipices imagining what’s beyond the rendered distance.

I think about this exact thing a lot. It also reminds me of the occasional post I’ll see on the Red Dead Redemption 2 subreddit of people saying they wish they lived in the 18-1900s, before getting lightly roasted in the comments.
