Beyond the rise, the land rolls away in low, scrub-covered hills punctuated by pale boulders, with only scattered trees clinging to the more sheltered hollows. At dawn and dusk, mist crawls up from distant ravines, filling the dips in the land and leaving the ruins like an island of stone adrift upon a gray, rolling sea. Travellers approaching from afar see the place as a jagged crown against the horizon, its broken walls stark and lifeless under a wide, empty sky.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/greystone-ruins.png"><img alt="The Greystone Ruins" class="wp-image-43575" height="600" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/greystone-ruins.png?w=400" width="400" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Greystone Ruins (1200 dpi)</figcaption></figure> </div> <p>Within the boundaries of these ruins, the faint remains of streets and courtyards can still be traced. A small lane, now choked with rubble and half-buried paving, runs between roofless shells of what were once townhouses, workshops, or modest shrines. Low walls outline former homes, their interiors open to the elements, their mosaics cling stubbornly to some floors, their patterns shattered. In places, the stone has slumped and cracked, suggesting that some calamity shook the neighborhood from below, tilting columns and splitting thresholds.</p> <p>A few structures stand more intact than others. The central building has thinner walls, but has held up better than the others with portions of the roof still in place. Around these ruins, narrow alleys twist away in unexpected directions, abruptly ending in heaps of fallen masonry or in open, empty spaces where entire buildings have been erased down to their foundations.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/greystone-ruins-nogrid.png"><img alt="The Greystone Ruins" class="wp-image-43576" height="600" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/greystone-ruins-nogrid.png?w=400" width="400" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Greystone Ruins (1200 dpi, no grid)</figcaption></figure> </div> <p>The people who built these ruins belonged to the city-state of Thuran Ves&#8217;k, a coastal power built upon a foundation of trade, stonecraft, and the worship of a small pantheon of household gods. Their architects favoured hard, pale rock quarried from inland cliffs, carving it into clean-lined dwellings with flat roofs, internal courtyards, and rain-catching cisterns. The Greystone Ruins were neither the richest nor the poorest part of Thuran Ves&#8217;k, but a place of respectable artisans: bronze casters, textile dyers, scribes-for-hire, and keepers of modest shrines where day-to-day petitions were offered in exchange for oil and incense.</p> <p>Now, only the Greystone Ruins still cling to the hill, the rest of the city lost to landslides and the slow grinding of time. <p>The Ember Reliquary is a ruin of devotion, a shrine to a god whose name has been scorched from every surface and memory. Ages ago, pilgrims descended into its chambers to bask in the warmth of divine flame and to offer sacrifices of oil, incense, and blood. Now the reliquary is a place of ruin and danger, its sacred fires guttering but never extinguished. The air is thick with soot, the walls cracked by heat. The place is never silent, the hiss of embers and the faint groan of stone that has been scorched for centuries echoes through the structure.</p> <p>The reliquary was abandoned after the god’s fall from grace. The faithful were scattered, their rituals outlawed, and their relics seized or destroyed. Yet the reliquary itself resisted destruction. The fires within refused to die, and the relic at its heart still burns with a soul that flickers between life and death. Those who enter now do so not to worship but to plunder, to seek forbidden knowledge, or to test their courage against the lingering wrath of a forgotten divinity.</p> <p><strong>The Scorched Foyer</strong><br />Past the locked and sealed bronze doors, the antechamber of the reliquary is charred and blackened stone. Once it was a place of welcome, where murals depicted the fire god in triumph, surrounded by supplicants who offered their lives to the flame. Now those murals are charred and broken. The god’s name has been melted and scorched out wherever it appeared, leaving only scars in the stone. The air smells of ash and old smoke. The floor is littered with fragments of burnt offerings, fused into the flagstones. There is a faint warmth here, as though the murals themselves still radiate heat. Some will hear whispers in the crackling of unseen embers, voices that urge them to remember the god’s name. Doors here lead to the Sanctum and Pit, and small openings in the wall look into the idol chamber at the centre of the complex.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ember-reliquary.jpg"><img alt="The Ember Reliquary" class="wp-image-39914" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ember-reliquary.jpg" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Ember Reliquary (300 dpi promo)</figcaption></figure></div> <p><strong>The Cinder Pit</strong><br />This chamber is dominated by a wide pit filled with blackened embers. The pit hisses and smoulders, though no fuel feeds it. The air is dry and acrid, and every breath tastes of ash. The pit reacts to falsehood. Whenever a lie is spoken within the chamber, flames erupt from the embers in a sudden burst, scorching those nearby. The flames vanish as quickly as they appear, leaving only the smell of burnt hair.</p> <p><strong>The Smothering Sanctum</strong><br />Filled with cursed incense that never ceases to burn, the air in this chamber is thick and sluggish, and every breath feels like drowning in smoke. The incense siphons oxygen from the room, leaving intruders gasping for air. The statue leaks lava from its wounds, which pools in a massive bowl it holds, and then flows to the floor where the edges hardened into jagged black glass. The idol demands appeasement. If offerings of blood or flame are not made, the lava flow increases, flooding the chamber with unbearable heat. If appeased, the keys to the final chamber float to the top of the lava. And of course, the idol has gemstone eyes, because this is D&amp;D, right?</p> <p><strong>Ember’s End</strong><br />Sealed away in the back chamber of the reliquary is Ember’s End, where the relic of the fire god still burns. The relic is a shard of divine essence, a flame that flickers with a soul caught between life and death. It rests on a raised pedestal of black stone, surrounded by a circle of scorched runes. The flame is small, no larger than a candle, yet it radiates immense heat and power. Approaching the relic, one&#8217;s soul becomes drawn towards it &#8211; as if the flame hungers for company. Touching it can sear flesh, ignite the spirit, burn away curses, or burn away the supplicant&#8217;s eyes. Some hear the voice of the forgotten god, others are consumed entirely, leaving only ash.</p> <p><em>The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 7,200 x 10,200 pixels (24 x 34 squares). The western portion of the valley is lush with plants that grow in the rich volcanic soil, whereas the rest of the Cindervale area is coated with black ash and scorched of life. The winds come in from the west, keeping the keep out of the foul vapours of the volcano.</p> <p>The elves called the volcano &#8220;Emberheart&#8221; because of the river of molten rock running like blood through its veins. Some also believe that a slumbering fire god arrived here and was bound within the mountain during the great war. The slopes of the volcano glow at night with drifting embers and streamlets of slow-moving lava. Black ash fields spread for miles eastwards; and with every full moon the mountain seems to &#8220;breath&#8221; incandescent gas plumes into the night sky.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/emberwatch-keep.jpg"><img alt="Emberwatch Keep" class="wp-image-37250" height="506" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/emberwatch-keep.jpg?w=529" width="529" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Emberwatch Keep (300 dpi promo)</figcaption></figure></div> <p>Constructed a century ago by Sir Darius Scoriawyn for his nameless dwarven ally who would use the volcano for forging heat-tempered steel alloys like none seen in this world before. The corners of the square structure are reinforced with rusting iron bracing, but the actual construction isn&#8217;t designed for siege or combat with very few arrow slits and a propensity for windows instead.</p> <p>The structure is four stories tall with a basement (not mapped at this time). The lower level is the greeting and dining hall, kitchens, scullery, and buttery. The second level is the great hall on the north side, and the barracks for the men-at-arms on the south. The main room of the great hall has massive doors that swing open on nights when the wind is right to look at the twinkling cone of the mountain.</p> <p>The third level contains the Lord &amp; Lady&#8217;s apartment as well as a smaller suite for noble guests.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/emberwatch-keep.png"><img alt="Emberwatch Keep" class="wp-image-37251" height="506" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/emberwatch-keep.png?w=529" width="529" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Emberwatch Keep (1200 dpi)</figcaption></figure></div> <p> With the return of the dwarves to their own world upon their great Earthships, the keep changed hands and is now the domain of Lady Aurelia Magmaris &#8211; a noble with fiery passions that match her fiery hair. Trained in both swordplay and fire magic, she has found this keep much to her liking.</p> <p>Her husband, Calian Magmaris, is less enamoured with the site now. While it was the Cindervale that inspired his opus &#8211; &#8220;The Heart&#8217;s Inferno Suite&#8221;, he dreams of composing pastoral ballads in gentler climes. The order operated as paladins but actually worshipped a malevolent deity of chaos and destruction dedicated to despoiling other religions and foiling their plans.</p> <p>The fortification is built in tiers, from the lower tier at the east entrance and the upper tiers to the north culminating in the bridge gate that connects to a stone bridge that crosses a small valley. There is a stagnant pool in the main courtyard that was the focal point of their ceremonies, believed to be a portal to the deity&#8217;s realm.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/thiasau-fortress.png"><img alt="Fortress Thiasau" class="wp-image-35957" height="408" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/thiasau-fortress.png?w=529" width="529" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Fortress Thiasau (1200 dpi)</figcaption></figure></div> <p>To this day, the pool can occasionally appear to be glowing, an unearthly light emanating from it until you look straight at it. At night, whispered voices can often be heard along the walkways and in the interior spaces &#8211; remnants of the order&#8217;s dark rituals.</p> <p>The Order of the Crimson Heart has long since faded into obscurity, but the fortress has not been abandoned. Now, it is home to a group of ruthless bandits who have claimed it as their stronghold. Led by Marik the Viper, the bandits use the fortress as a base for their quiet raids on nearby villages and travelers. They keep a low profile, operating in quick and quiet raids, or killing all witnesses and then setting the scene of the crime to seem that goblins did it.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/thiasau-fortress-nogrid.png"><img alt="Fortress Thiasau" class="wp-image-35958" height="408" src="https://dysonlogos.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/thiasau-fortress-nogrid.png?w=529" width="529" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Fortress Thiasau (1200 dpi, no grid)</figcaption></figure></div> <p><strong>Plot Hooks</strong></p> <p><strong>Bridge Ambush:</strong> The party is travelling through the region when they are ambushed by bandits on the long bridge leading to the fortress&#8217;s upper entrance. Forced to retreat into the fortress, they must find a way to escape while contending with the bandits and uncovering the fortress&#8217;s secrets.</p> <p><strong>Rescue Mission:</strong> Lord Jeffries&#8217; son has been kidnapped by Marik&#8217;s bandits and is being held in Fortress Thiasau. Someone must infiltrate the fortress, rescue the child, and bring an end to Marik&#8217;s reign of terror.</p> <p><strong>Unearthed Secrets:</strong> Garinfel the Sage has found documentation about a supposed hidden chamber beneath the sacrificial pool that holds powerful artifacts left behind by the Order of the Crimson Heart.</p> <p><strong>Reclaiming the Past:</strong> Ayrin Mortegon, a descendant of one of the original members of the Order of the Crimson Heart, seeks to reclaim the fortress and restore the order&#8217;s former glory. They are looking for someone to assist in the conquest of the fortress, facing off against the bandits and any supernatural forces that may still reside there.
