Thank you for raising this reporting, Senator!

This article is a bit misleading though. The longest government shutdown was 35 days long. In 2018. Under the first Trump administration.

Justice Barrett's response highlighted a responsibility I'd taken on quite late in life: to engage those around us in civic discussion, despite our disagreements.

Rosen presented a question which, for me, requires more introspection than academic analysis.

Agreed!

"[The Spirit of Party], unfortunately, is inseperable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human Mind... the common & continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise People to discourage and restrain it."

I couldn't agree more!

If only the parts where rote partisanship were lambasted - calmly - by Washington were as well remembered.

"[T]he common & continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise People to discourage and restrain it."

It is a lesson worth relearning!

Washington, in the same speech, also focused our attention on staving the follies of rote partisanship.

"[T]he common & continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise People to discourage and restrain it."

I find myself in complete agreement!

Washington would implore us to develop our individual faculties to combat rote partisan alignment.

We should absolutely seek to replace complacency with action, wherever it may be. Yet we may still use our leisure to better develop ourselves to engage one another in those actions and discussions.

"[L]leisure does not imply idleness. It means the ability to work not less but more, ability to work at something besides breadwinning, ability to work harder while working at breadwinning, and ability to work more years at breadwinning. Leisure, so defined, is an essential of successful democracy."
