I believe mastering also includes making sure the entire album sounds cohesive (consistent volume throughout, etc.)

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that mixing is the process of editing individual pieces of a song (effects on certain instruments, etc.) and mastering is the process of editing an entire song as a whole (adding compression, adjusting volume of final mix, etc.)
