At my school, we make meta skills explicit for the children as part of our lessons, and spend time making links between the skills you use in, say, maths and the things that are important to them.

Completely agree. There are no writing rules, only writing tools. Adverbs, telling and showing are all things with +/- that you can use to get the effects on your reader you want. At least, that's how I've always seen it.
