I gave two papers today at AARSBL. The first was a paper on CS Lewis and Bultmann responding to Leslie Baynes’s new book. The second was “Resident Arsonists: The Postliberal Ecclesiology of Project 2025,” continuing my analysis of postliberal theology’s connection to today’s MAGA politics.

Juxtaposing these two surveys highlights the way Christian/religious identity and religious participation are increasingly divergent in the United States. To be Christian increasingly has little to do with actual involvement in religious practices and has more to do with your political in-group.

Randomly stopped for a hike at Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska and tracked down a remote cemetery listed as “half-breed cemetery,” where people of mixed Native and Anglo ancestry were buried.

As I wrote in my book and have said repeatedly, universalism is and always will be the ultimate heresy, since it strikes at the heart of the ecclesial power structure that makes the label of heresy—and also integralist imperialism—possible in the first place.

What’s most bizarre about this whole situation is that Trump has hardly shown the least bit of interest in presenting himself as a continuation of Reagan’s legacy. Marcus Witcher highlighted this point in his excellent book Getting Right with Reagan. kansaspress.ku.edu/9780700628773/

I found out another essay of mine is now in print, an essay exploring via a typology of my own creation (based on Hans Frei's 5 types of theology) the different ways historical Jesus research is used in 20th century theology. I originally wrote this in 2018, but it came out this past summer.
