in theoty you can look at an open sourced menu theme and just change it into what you want (just be sure to check the licence info cause open source dosn't mean its public domain)

tbh alot of those federated ones are built to have the user side be interchangeable so it'd be slightly easier to swap one for the other, and id say don't even bother federating, just disable it to save the hassle

but what if we just use open source code? pixelfed is provs a good option gor this, and its federated stuff so it can vonnect to other instances... or not if you don't want it too

thats why i chose to jump to matrix, its got ways of bridgeing rooms together for the stubborn peeps who won't move from their current setup. problem is that it takes technical knowledge to do the cool stuff like that so its by no means a perfect solution
