And, if you let it sit long enough, it would start attacking others to try and get back what you stole from it." Dusty could feel his hackles raising and took a few deep breaths to try and stay calm. "...how many have you done this with so far?" "I'd wager... there's seven down there right now. Eight or so suddenly collapsed one day and I had to move them off to the woods, so... fifteen in total? Bit of a high turnover rate, but I've kept the files up and made sure they've received all they needed, so what does it matter? Society as a whole has still functioned the same, so I don't think it's any particular loss..." That was the last straw. Dusty growled before barking ferociously at Sylvaine, lunging as close as he could. "YOU SON OF A BITCH, I OUGHTTA KILL YOU FOR YOUR FUCKING ABSOLUTE DISREGARD FOR THESE PEOPLE." "Here's the thing, and something you have to understand," Mohan said, frowning. "I am not from here. I am from Marrakhan. The caracal is someone I picked up in Ushtani. While we're rare sights, no one would notice us if we left, and we have few others who would be able to vouch for our very existence if our names were not on a register." Dusty's mouth dropped, his ears went flat, and he looked horrified between Kuroga and Mohan. He knew Kuroga had made it alright, and hoped to the Creator it wasn't that way. "I'm afraid so," Kuroga said, frowning sympathetically. "It wasn't until the Hunters' Guild was well-established here that I had a fair chance at survival in Irilian. I was what they call 'stateless' after leaving Ushtani; my official home was there until I applied for residency in Domasis. Even then, I got lucky because of my connection to the Academy. But here in Irilian, it would not pass until I was signed up with the Guild." "So Sylvaine's main workers are the dregs that no one cares about - those whom the church is supposed to help - or the stateless who can't get their name on a register and thus are fully in his hands..." Dusty recoiled and slumped like he'd been thumped in the chest. He wanted to scream but it only came out as a series of panting breaths and an ache that made him raise his paw to his head as though trying to keep something from breaking out. It was almost too much to handle.

The only scene I've fully thought of is an early morning / restless night where Dusty and the dad are the only two awake and he finally gets it when the dad is trying everything to help him calm down because he's picked up that Dusty's nervous / homesick before the coyote did.

Dusty does not have a good time in book 2. a close friend (and major character) dies shortly in, the guild he recently joined and gained renown for is under fire by mercenaries, he has to take a few months in a foreign country to sort out the friend's killer and what's going on with the mercenary guild, and his church and Order are shortly revealed to be complicit in a recent spread of corruptive energies. this puts a lot of stress on the coyote and, though not all is bad, it is enough to push him to his limits every once in a while. take this night, for example. staying at the house of his love interest Kuroga, he's also now acutely aware that the mom doesn't like him, the brother doesn't care for him, the sister's mad because he snubbed her (Dusty's not gay, just already taken), and Dusty's getting the feeling he's not wanted. he's restless and actively pondering if he wants to go somewhere else when the father, who can't speak the same language, comes out and notices he's sitting in the living area. normally taciturn, Dusty at first tells the father that he's leaving, but the father comes over and gently places a paw on his shoulder, and things start to turn. he can't speak to Dusty very well, but the father does sit with him and try a few things to calm him down. he tries to give Dusty a drink, shows old paintings of himself and his son (remarking on their similarities), and eventually gets across (through miming) that his son is happy with him so he will be. he also tries to explain a few things further (but still runs into trouble), and does get across that he wants Dusty to stay, but that's enough; Dusty finally breaks down. not from stress, but pure relief that *someone* in his love interest's family likes him. shortly after this, Dusty makes his love confession to Kuroga and gets it returned in kind, with Kuroga affirming his dad likes him. Dusty will soon have to step up to the family's defense, and will do so because of this compassion.

(I was SO TEMPTED to buy and use it as a body pillow, but one that I would wear for Dusty seemed the better purchase.)

Realizing that my hypno kink of being seduced and put to sleep by the hypnotist is an odd output of a desire to be wanted by doing so through a fantasy where I may have slightly low self-opinion in real life enough that magic is needed for me to stick around *even in a fantasy indulgence setting*:

I was going to jokingly put "catnip", but nah, this mix is closer. Also two things he would legitimately enjoy as much as I do irl (particularly if the root beer has more of a vanilla flavor).

In case you're wondering: this is why I enabled THIS setting. If I follow you, you either felt semi-trustworthy or I thought you were interesting enough.

I DON'T follow randos for this reason; I might want number go up, but I don't do it via follow-for-follow tactics.

Enjoy a pic courtesy of HeroForge (it's the easiest modeling tool I have as someone inept at art, and as someone who is shy even on commission requests), and some background and arc-usage courtesy of the alt-text! :>
an anthropomorphic caracal with a turban-like hat, fur-covered shoulder armor, and a pant-and-train combo in teal and orange. he also has a small wooden shield and a buckler. no name given yet. background: Ushtani culture is... kind of problematic lately. restrictions given by a new regime battling for power have made it where it's difficult for multiple members of a family to obtain the same position. this leads to those who have distinct pedigrees sometimes finding themselves on societal fringes through no fault of their own. for those heavily in guard, army, or other trained fighters, this results in wandering bands of mercenaries who offer protection services and travel guidance. they're legit and usually charge reasonable as the deserts are not exactly forgiving, but the new regime doesn't quite like them and tries to give them a bad name. it hasn't quite worked, considering they're now known as some of the fiercest desert fighters, and even the new regime doesn't try to take them head-on. story purpose: this caracal is one that leads Dusty and a small troupe across the desert trying to visit Ushtani. the caracal takes an interest in the coyote, with Dusty having a vision of a potential alternate pathway that does lead to him accepting it. in this universe, however, Dusty refuses. this does not stop the caracal (and a partner of his) from helping out occasionally, including taking them across the desert, taking down a false cult, and defending some of the locals when the new regime starts to go corrupt enough to basically make zombies out of their own followers and sic them on the locals. the caracal doesn't leave Ushtani, but provides help whenever he can, half out of personal interest and half because Dusty is traveling with another Ushtani native (and has taken their side in the regime conflict). this is part of the spark for what is essentially a holy war, but that's the major plot and much more difficult to describe.

Something that I haven't touched much on but is starting to rear its head is the "Dark Souls"-element of the fantasy fiction. I haven't had a ton of time to really sort it out, but here's a HeroForge image (with alt text!) of what I'm trying to get across.
a HeroForge model of a lynx in purple-and-black attire. the colors are dulled, the head-fur is patchy, the proportions are off, they're relatively thin and almost emaciated, and they might have one or two broken pieces. not to mention the eyes are oddly both glossy as though it can't focus well, entirely black and pale yellow, and the mouth is hanging open. this is the look of someone who is corrupted but not entirely dead. someone tainted by corruption like this is not exactly in command of themselves. they've been basically forced into submission by someone of greater power, drained of their magic and life-force. the result is a gaunt, emaciated husk of who they once were, now roaming mindlessly looking for someone with a high-enough magic power to try and absorb some of it back. the only thing that can draw life-force from someone else in the way that they need is more corruption. and while they can't exactly eat magic, they'll target magic-users and those with high reserves in the mindless attempt to do so. they also can't be reasoned with at this stage; most commonly the accepted way of dealing with one is to neutralize it. the most common cause is someone of high corruption but still in command of their functions going mad. they drain others to seek more power for themselves, but may back off if they don't feel like they'll get full. but if done for long enough, what remains is practically the same anyways. not that the corrupted individual cares - the husk is just a casual by-product on the way to power that failed and serves no more use anyways.
