As an editor, I can tell you this is a big thing in the writer community. Some people get precious about one idea and ruminate it on it for 10+ years. Instead of really learning how to write first through trial and error.
Not that you can’t learn through revision, but the returns are diminishing.

One thing you can’t do with rectangular tiles or irregular connection points is rotate tiles. Which is a shame because it’s a cool mechanic in games like Mechanical Beast , where the players are moving around inside the belly of a giant robot.

It only works if you flip on the same axis each time so it’s a much easier mechanic to implement with a rectangle than a square.

I also use a variety of rules that affect how pieces can be connected. Sometimes the player is allowed to choose, other times they are forced.
I use the same cards for a variety of cross compatible games. So far none of those adds a dungeon crawling element.

Thanks for sharing. Cool article and I had not seen those original TSR tiles.
One thing that I have done with mine that isn’t mentioned in the article is all my cards are two sided.
But when flipped the connection points remain the same, so segments of the dungeon can be modified/upgraded by flip

Super cool! I’m bookmarking it so I can read it tonight.

Thanks, I’ve been designing a series of cross-compatible games around the same base cards.
In some of them, monsters can cross over the negative space, depending on how close the cards are together.

Exactly! I did want a cozy game. But this wasn’t what I had in mind.

My thinking was instead of designing expansions for the original, I’ll design new games that use the original like an expansion.

Neat! Happy to meet someone who likes the game. This is basically a new game, simpler and easier to learn, with new win conditions and a scoring track.

But it is cross compatible so you can shuffle the two games together and add the scoring track on top of your original game.

You gotta slow down, bub, I only just got Oath.

I had to put it on hold last year, so these illustrations have just been sitting there waiting to go.

I’m still sitting on stuff from 2009. I publish regularly though.

Unfortunately, no. We have talked about expanding to other platforms, but haven’t done it yet.
