I’ve spent this semester teaching a course focused exclusively on the works of Charles Chesnutt. It’s been the best time. My students seemingly apply this final sentence of his novel The Marrow of Tradition to all their hopes and aspirations. They’ve made me keep it close too.

I always think of this poem by David Ignatow when I think to write poems for friends who also write. I love that feeling of writing to the friend and to their writing. I also love William Carlos Williams’ poem “Waiting.”
