I've been obsessed with Notebook Navigator. It overhauls the file explorer pane into something closer to other apps like Apple Notes.

That's valid; Obsidian may be proprietary but I trust the team because they're small and seem to value letting users customize basically everything to their liking.

As for markdown, yeah, not much I can do there to sugarcoat it. If you don't like markdown it's not for you.

And in case David Walters sees this and tries Obsidian, there is a plugin that makes navigation on the sidebar much friendlier to people from other note-taking apps too.

The plugin is called "Notebook Navigator." It might not be exactly like OneNote, but it's better than just files and folders.

I don't publish much writing, but I figure 700+ personal notes is solid. Observing things & recording it, writing about stuff you learn, and jotting your thoughts down is great. Ideas will come if you do.

Though if you need your writing synced across multiple devices then Obsidian might not be for you (as you would have to pay for it)

For a Docs alternative I'd expect LibreOffice to suffice as a word processor.

But if you don't need a full on word processor for your writing, I might suggest something simpler like a markdown editor. There's many, but my favorite is Obsidian.

Obsidian definitely isn't for everyone, but I'm glad that you took some of the lessons learned in using Obsidian to improve your Notion workflows.

Something of note is that "Multiplayer" is a planned feature in the Obsidian Roadmap, and Obsidian Publish lets you make notes public (but it's paid).
