and need a distraction. but... that time would prolly be better spent reading poetry or discworld or smth idk. im not denying that public social media has brought me wonderful priceless treasures, but i think im no longer getting the value out of it that i used to.

or maybe the spambots are considered engagement and therefore make bluesky more valuable to investors idk. im talking outta my ass at this point, i know nothing about finance or commerce or whatever

The thing is, even if each person invited just 2 people on average per week, it'd take less than 5 months to get a million accounts. I guess the actual frequency of invites is much less, since people are really hesitant to create new accounts.

I guess my only plausible reason this might actually work is that... maybe this hasn't been implemented because of profit incentives? Because I can see how an invite-only social media would have difficulty growing.... maybe?

Like, I'd hate to be that annoying non-expert on social media saying "why don't you just..." Usually, the simple solution hasn't been implemented because it simply doesn't work (and it not working is something the experts have had to patiently explain 10000 times)

I'm not an experienced computer scientist or anything and I'm sure the problem is a lot more complicated than this, but I genuinely am struggling to see what issues this account moderation system has.
March 3, 2025 at 12:13 PM
oh also if people use this to block groups of people, that's fine, right? Sometimes you *do* just want to block entire friend groups or circles of jerks. The trans ppl won't get blocked by anybody except transphobes, AND trans ppl have the power to block terf networks
March 3, 2025 at 12:13 PM
so this levels the playing field for humans vs spammers. They no longer have the power to create bots faster than we can block, because now our blocks are exponentially more effective.
March 3, 2025 at 12:13 PM
so spammers are "encouraged" to create branching structures of bot invites... but this also makes it wayyyy more efficient for us to prune them out, because each time you go 1 level up the invite chain, the amount of spambots you can block increases exponentially
March 3, 2025 at 12:13 PM
if the cooldown was 1 week per invite, and each new account was allowed 10 invites, that would mean a branch structure could create 100 accounts in 2 weeks, and a chain of 100 bots would take ~ 2 years to make
March 3, 2025 at 12:13 PM
you could even add a "cooldown" period to discourage these linear bot chains. If each invite takes 24 hours to be approved, creating a linear chain of 42 bot accounts would take 42 days, whereas creating 42 bot accounts using a branch structure takes just 2 days
