Happy Sunday, friends and fans! On today’s edition of "Chart Chat," we go full speed ahead into the post-grunge era of alternative rock, beginning with Live and the first single off their multiplatinum juggernaut "Throwing Copper," titled “Selling The Drama.”
Modern Rock No. 1s: Live and "Selling The Drama"
As grunge acts dominated the 1994 music landscape, record companies rushed to cash in on the wave. Enter Live, whose grunge-adjacent sound rocketed them to the top the charts with "Selling The Drama."

In today’s rare midweek posting of “Chart Chat,” I close the book on Nirvana’s "In Utero" dominance with “All Apologies,” a lamentation by Kurt Cobain on expectations, not being exactly what the world expects you to be, but ultimately recognizing that we are all special in our own way.
Modern Rock No. 1s: Nirvana and "All Apologies"
Nirvana's "All Apologies" explores the depths of self-doubt, self-acceptance, and the impermanence of existence mere months before Kurt Cobain's death

Even if you think you don't love "Cannonball" by The Breeders, I invite you to give this a read and judge again. Everyone's invited, even you "real cuckoos" and "little libertines."

From my "Chart Chat" Substack...
Modern Rock Tracks ... No. 2s: The Breeders and "Cannonball"
From Pixies and Throwing Muses to The Breeders, Kim Deal and company bring their eclectic, weirdly cool vibe into "Cannonball," arguably one of the best songs of the 1990s

Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Alice In Chains...

I just wrote about Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," a song written by this guy a little over 30 years ago. It topped the alternative charts at the same time as Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover," which is an interesting juxtaposition of chart-topping hits about love.

It's going to take a concerted effort to replicate my Twitter timeline over here, so for now I'll probably just hang out on Twitter. But I put up a profile pic, so that's something. 🤷🏼‍♂️
