I tell my friends all the time to use their sketchbooks more. I take mine everywhere, and it's my preferred way to hash out an idea or get that on demand joy from drawing my characters.

They're there to be messy in. To practice without an undo button. I usually fill one a year!

Curse of Strahd was the first DnD module I got to play in, and this was my character - Vel Winterstep! A runaway elf, kidnapped by bandits, and ended up something else entirely when their camp was consumed by mists...

It took a bit to hash this out -- the problem with committing to 'mess up the boy more whenever he nearly dies' is you get a nice look, and then sht happens and you've gota put your money where your mouth is.

Turns out he's the champion of an ancient god of Death and Justice, who's been mostly (but not all the way!) consumed by a Worm God that has hijacked it's prison.

His job? Kill the worm.

So we can get away? But that depends on how the worm appears... But I can't move the ship AND break the obelisk at the same time so we HAVE to escape back to wherever we docked. Our crew's Thri-Kreen artificer often claims that the others in the party would make good Thri-kreen, as a complement. So, a while back, a few of us drew what that could look like for our characters.

Xamryn is absolutely not thrilled by this development.

A thri kreen, a mantis-like race of insect people, with a black and grey carapace. Lines of gold that look like cracks run along him. The top of his head is white, where pigment has faded. Huge mantis eyes resemble a view of space with a dull amber tint. One pair of arms hang at his sides, the other is crossed over his middle. "Not a word" he says telepathicly.
