Glaciology research at Durham University on the past, present and future of our mountain glacier and ice sheet environments ❄️

Another great day of the IGS symposium, with a field trip visiting evidence of glaciation in upper Teesdale, Eden Valley drumlins at Brough Castle, the fluvioglacial landscape of the Brampton Kame Belt, and streamlined bedforms from Tyne Gap ice streaming (plus Roman archaeology) at Hadrian's Wall!

It's been a great first two days hosting the @igsoc.bsky.social symposium on ice streams and outlet glaciers. We've had excellent talks & posters spanning both contemporary and palaeo glaciology, and a sunny icebreaker in the courtyard of Durham Castle. ❄️🥂 Looking forward to tomorrow's excursion!

An exciting new study from our group, led by @polarguy.bsky.social, sheds light on the ancient pre-glacial landscape beneath East Antarctica and how an extensive network of fluvial surfaces has modulated subsequent ice sheet response to climate. Read more here! 👇❄️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Congratulations to @cristinabalaban.bsky.social who was back visiting Durham today for graduation! 🎓 Cristina's PhD research reconstructed the past glaciation of the Southern Carpathians, Romania, and she is now continuing her palaeoglaciological work as a postdoc in Prague. Well done Cristina! 👏❄️🍾

Enjoying a glaciology group writing retreat this morning, with excellent cake provided by @hollywytia.bsky.social! ✍️🍰❄️

Matias Morgan, a budding student glaciologist at @geogdurham.bsky.social, has just won the inaugural Spine Sprint North, a 43 mile race along the northern end of the Pennine Way, at only 21 years old! Well done Matias! 👏

Prof Chris Stokes presented his latest research during the Research Dialogues of the UN Climate Conference in Bonn today, explaining that limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C may not be enough to protect the world’s ice sheets...

CONGRATULATIONS to our very own @mikebentley.bsky.social who has been awarded an OBE for his services to Antarctic Science! Mike has not only made an outstanding contribution to polar science, he is also a fantastic colleague and we are all delighted for him! ❄️🥳

📣 A new study by Harry Zekollari and others estimates that glaciers around the world will lose ~40% of their mass relative to 2020 even if we managed to keep warming at present-day levels (1.2°C above preindustrial). This committed loss would add 113mm to sea level. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Hello Bluesky! 👋 This is the first post from the glaciology group at @geogdurham.bsky.social - give us a follow to hear about our icy research activities and adventures! We had a mini conference today to catch up on the brilliant range of contemporary and palaeo research by members of our group! ❄️
