For the past week, Master's students Oscar and Freddie have joined Kevin and Kristijan in Zermatt and Saas-Fee's 3000m-high ophiolite complex, collecting samples for geochemical analysis of stable and radiogenic isotopes. Stay tuned to learn about the future outcomes of their research!

Four weeks in the Scottish Highlands? That has been Izzy's summer, collecting molybdenite & granite for U-Pb and Re-Pb dating to test genetic links between the mineralisation and granite formation. Lots of hiking, bogs, wild camping in storms, lost samples, Highland cows & swims in fairy pools!

Refreshing news to end the summer: PhD student Freya Alldred frosty tales from Greenland & Svalbard ❄️🌊. Aboard Le Commandant Charcot, Freya used an underwater drone to study the kelp's role in nutrient cycles, productivity & carbon storage. Fieldwork funded by @theexplorersclub.bsky.social & Ponant

Our volcanologists had a brilliant time on the @durhamearthsci.bsky.social booth at the Celebrate Science family festival in Durham last week! We had a make-your-own explosion station, a microscope for looking at thin sections, coloring pages, and a sink or float test (pumice vs obsidian).

@durhamearthsci.bsky.social staff and students build the world. Expect to see the result at open days and beyond!

Amazing day with our new Level 1 students exploring the North Pennines AONB including the Whin Sill at Low Force and Carboniferous limestone at Summerhill Force (Gibson’s Cave). Hopefully they’ve come away with new friends and an appreciation of how our Earth influences our environment and economy.

Important article published by our Jenny Jenkins asking 'Why aren't students signing up to study geophysics? Are they unaware of how in-demand it is? Or are they just too cool for geophysics school?'. Published in Astronomy & Geophysics.
