UCEA’S 1.4% PAY OFFER IS SIMPLY NOT

at over 4.6% (Aug 2025) there is no end
in sight to the cost-of-living crisis. 1.4%
is also a massive national pay cut.

Gillies Report brings impetus to University recovery The University of Dundee has responded to the publication of the Gillies Report into the deterioration of the University's financial position. • University acknowledges clear failings in financial monitoring, management and governance. • Professor Shane O'Neill, Interim Principal and Vice-Chancellor, steps down • Acting Chair of Court, and Chair of Finance & Policy, both bringing forward departures, with immediate effect • Leadership will digest the full implications of the report and commit to act on the findings. Departing Interim Principal has apologised for the impact this situation has had on many people, particularly our staff and students.

Unite Scotland demands the implementation of a government task force over ‘gross financial mismanagement’ as 700 jobs face being axed at the University of Dundee.

The full statement:
Unite the union can confirm that hundreds of workers at the University of Dundee are being balloted on industrial action as part of its campaign to fight for jobs and to save the future of the University. The development follows interim principal Shane O'Neill revealing this week in a letter to the Scottish Parliament that the total amount of jobs at immediate risk could exceed 700 as the University grapples with a £35m deficit. The huge job cuts proposal represents 21 per cent of the University's workforce of 3,259 people. Unite believes that jobs could be at risk as early as this month. Unite represents hundreds of workers at the University in various roles such as professional services staff, including technicians and student support. The ballot opens tomorrow (4 April) and closes on 24 April. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite will do everything industrially, legally and politically possible to protect the livelihoods of hundreds of workers at the University of Dundee.” “The situation is in danger of spiralling out of control with the very existence of the University now at risk without government intervention. Unite will support our members every step of the way in defence of their jobs.” Unite has demanded urgent action by the Scottish Government to protect hundreds of jobs at the University and claimed that unless this happens then the ‘very existence’ of the university is under threat following ‘gross financial mismanagement’. The union added that the decision by the university to stand aside from co-sponsoring an external investigation into the financial crisis with the Scottish Funding Council is welcome, but it will not get to all the root causes. The union has demanded the Scottish Government intervene by establishing a Task Force involving all key stakeholders to ensure the future viability of the University and to bring forward stabilising measures which can protect hundreds of livelihoods. Katrina Currie, Unite industrial officer, said: “Unite has no option but to respond to the gross financial mismanagement which has shaken the University of Dundee to its foundations. Under no circumstances will we allow compulsory redundancies to take place because the workers are blameless, and they should not have to pay the price for incompetence. “The Scottish government needs to intervene to stabilise the situation because this crisis is in danger of inflicting a crushing economic blow to the city. “The external investigation being led by the Scottish Funding Council is insufficient. We need a government led Task Force which would involve all key stakeholders so that we can collectively work towards saving jobs and getting the University back on a path to sustainability.”
