I was the exact same. Like fire emblem, everything outside of the battles was repellent to me, but giving it a chance really turned me around on it. Buried 5 hours into it on my first sitting

You can cut corners in some places mate, like a floor mat, but make sure you get a tent that's got a high hydrostatic head.
That's the waterproof rating, and I wouldn't go lower than 4000mm in our current weather.
