Another one.
The desiccated body of a fledgling bird with its featherless, mummified wings seemingly clenched in anguish, back arched and head flung back like it’s overcome with extreme emotion. Its mouth is all the way open. There are holes throughout its body, almost like a long abandoned wasps nest and its legs are so dry and brittle they look like hay. It’s lying on a bricked sidewalk.

I just finished Open Wide by Jessica Gross and it’s SO GOOD omg.

His eyes are about 1/6 the width of the book away from the spine and they’re the kind of eyes that follow you wherever you are. Well that’s a creepy little room.
Nighttime, it’s dark outside. There is no light besides the light coming from inside a room that can be seen from the sidewalk through a window with cross-latticed metal grate. The room is a half-level below the sidewalk so we are looking down at it. Everything—the walls, the floor, the support beams—are a pale gray. But centered in the room is a mat that is about 3x5 feet. It’s that kid’s play foam kind of mat made of red, yellow, green, and blue foam tiles. It is the only thing in the gray room and on it sits an austere plastic chair with its back to the window.

Situational awareness, attention to context clues, anticipatory alertness, common decency, use of indicator lights, acknowledge surroundings beyond what is directly in front of you. This is not hard. My dog can do these things (except she has no indicators). And get off your fucking phone.

A very old antiquated parking meter where you can drop a coin in the top but it’s no longer operational. But since it says FINE-O-METER, I repurposed it to measure your fineness and apparently it doesn’t go that high.

I must have missed the actual scene when the curse went into effect, but I caught the aftermath.
A red apple lying upside down on a bed of fallen brown leaves, framed by a trail of ivy vine. Just at the edge of the apple, which is covered in rot spots and bruises, there is an abandoned spider web. It is dense and chaotically woven, a little ragged looking, but it forms a veil between where the apple sits and the sidewalk.

Look at this stunning thing.
The body of a bird with the majority of its bones exposed and seemingly way too clean to match the rest of its body which still has some feathers and what must be blood spatter. There are no organs visible. It is crushed, trapped in a pose as if running towards something, the spray of blood adding to the appearance of motion. Its foot, still covered by tissue, looks as if it is mid-step along the crack between two blocks of sidewalk which it sprawls across. Its skeletal wings are bent, adding further to this narrative of propulsion, and brown feathers remain like a costume to complete the dramatic, operatic image.

A very creepy looking balloon store, down a half-flight of stairs with a chain at the top of the stairs (even though they’re open, since later the balloons were taken down) and the lights off. The sell nothing but balloons. They may even have your name, says the sign. Wouldn’t that be lucky 😬
