Maskerade by Josh Kirby
It's all going wrong at the operahouse. In this crowded scene, there's trolls, witches and watchmen about, but where's the opera ghost and will he kill again? The fat lady is singing but it doesn't look over just yet.

This excellent essay from Freyja Stokes examines the ways in which Terry Pratchett accurately portrays historical sex work in Europe, and its close connections to witchcraft.

The Pratchett panel with @quietandscreaming.bsky.social @rickandwrite.bsky.social @burdockbroughton.bsky.social went v well. We said various interesting things in a friendly if sometimes emotional way, but it was well received and we kept to the time (cos it's a big subject) plus some audience Qs.

For the weekend crowd, we're Halfway Through our Discworld reread, and look back on the 2nd quarter and 1st half of Discworld and what we've made of it. We also look ahead to the next 10 books. It's now been 2 years of us doing monthly episodes.
Quadrant 2: Halfway Through
In our look back over the 1st half of Discworld we fail to pick a fave, but do have a clear least fave. We talk through the subseries. We also make some additional comments about Maskerade and discuss the baddies of Discworld so far.

Unsurprisingly @iaingrant9.bsky.social mentions Terry Pratchett in the Comedy in Fantasy & Horror panel, comparing what Sir Terry does to Douglas Adams. They're often mentioned together as comic SFF writers, but Iain makes the good point that they do very different things in how they're funny.

In the "I Would Not Be Queen For All the World" (Monarchy) panel at @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social and @karisperring.bsky.social has touched on the Guards books as being radically against monarchy. Panel has turned to other fine recommendations, and of course Pratchett writes monarchies too.

7 minutes into the Satirical Fantasy panel Pratchett is mentioned. @caitlinrozakis.bsky.social has promised they'll not just focus on him, but you can't do this panel without mentioning Pratchett. That's a whole different panel we're at in a few days. This discussion is broad & interesting.

We're at @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social and at our 3rd panel. In the Asexuality in Fantasy panel it has just been suggested that Granny Weatherwax is ace as she can't be having with it. You can't really argue with that.

A good picture for spooky season, as Our Heroine is compelled by unknown forces to wander in the nigh. At least the little dog is paying attention.

Darktan to the Rescue by Jackie Morris
The art style here is great for the rustic setting, and interestingly belies how unpleasant the situation depicted is. You have to zoom in to see the dead rats around the dog. Though it's clear this is seen from a rat's POV.
