Opinions my own
This work uses a mathematical model of malaria transmission in Bangladesh. This model includes a spatial component for tracking human movements, and uses data collected from mobile phones as an input for that model. The result is a map of source-sink dynamics throughout the region.

Photograph taken of an exhibit at the Zambia National Museum of a Ground-to-Air Rocket used in witchcraft.

The caption evokes a world of invisible combat by witchcraft, where practitioners trade barrages of magic missiles.

The demolition of the Bastille was undertaken by a private citizen, Pierre-François Palloy, who became quite wealthy selling souvenirs and even giving guided tours of the site.

This is his portrait.

One of my favorite things that I learned on my French Revolution history tour of Paris is that when they dismantled the Bastille, they repurposed the stones. Some of them were carved into maquette sculptures of the Bastille, or other knicknacks, and sold as souvenirs.

First Bastille day had merch.

I checked in on them a few weeks ago and they said to say hi.

Seriously amazing to see them at surface level, I had so many questions for the docent about how they keep them alive.

Here is the former site of the Salle du Manège, where the National Assembly met (and where the terms of left, right, center referred to literal locations in the room). Currently a Loewe gallery for Paris Fashion Week.

Here is the former site of Cafe Foy, where Camille Desmoulins gave a speech where he warned that the king was bringing troops to attack them and urging them to defend themselves, eventually leading to the storming of the Bastille. Now it is Cafe Kitsune, where you can buy musubi.

Some fun highlights from my French Revolutionary History tour today.

Here is the remaining foundation stone from The Bastille, on display in a Metro station. Also here is the building on the site of the former Bastille, complete with artificial cannonball dents.

Communing with redwoods in Muir Woods. I took them for granted when I was growing up. Now I always make a point to visit them when I’m back in CA. A sacred place.

Steinbeck wrote that it’s impossible to photograph one but I tried anyway.

I'm Daniel, I'm a mathematician and I work with epidemiologists to develop and interpret simulation models of infectious disease for forecasting.

Passionate about teaching and building capacity with our international partners.
