Inevitable and frankly obvious outcome. And on top of that, the AI Overviews themselves are so laughably awful that I'm continually astonished that Google hasn't pulled them yet.

em dashes are a decent tell in social media posts, but not usually in news articles, where they're much more common. IIRC, MacOS may convert a double hyphen to an em dash automatically, and they may have even been inserted by the editor at 404 Media, if they were following a particular style guide.

That was a completely different and not at all comparable situation. The mods shut down their subs entirely and refused to allow posts, which effectively shut the spaces down for their communities. Reddit has not ever disallowed a ban on specific types of links or posts, to my knowledge

Reddit admins are largely hands-off when it comes to how moderators choose to run their own subs, so I actually don't think this would be particularly likely.
