There have certainly been historic cases of diesel owners disconnecting their odometers, though that’s obviously more difficult on new vehicles, especially EVs.

Absolutely, same here first WOF is for 3 years, then annually.

Here we pay in 1,000km “units” in advance.

I believe if you’re selling the vehicle privately it must be “in credit”, but no other limitation.

Diesel vehicles here have paid road user charges separately for decades (I think they were introduced in the 70s)

No ferry to Oz.

We have to display a label in the windscreen alongside the registration one.

There’s talk of digitising the whole system which would involve integrating with the vehicle.

Theoretically police could check the odometer during a traffic stop, though I’ve not heard of this ever happening, otherwise it would be checked as part of the warrant of fitness (WOF) check, similar to your MOT.

That sounds incredible.
Sadly Europe is a bit far for us to road trip to.
But here’s our monthly summary (home charging) plus a couple of public sessions (53.8kWh at NZ$48.43 total).
We have to pay road tax at NZ$0.076 per km.
So our total cost is around NZ$0.13 per km.

B-pillar is the structural pillar between the front and rear doors. A-pillar being the front/windscreen one.

We have the same issue here in NZ, where EVs are already subject to RUCs
