Correct, but the terms go the other way around. The genus is the first part of the name, species second. I think it feels kinda backwards because the genus is similar to our family/last names and the species is more specific like a first name

Hmm I meant to respond earlier but I had poor signal so I guess it didn't go through.. I believe candlesnuff refers to Xylaria hypoxylon which looks more or less identical and is in the same genus, but grows on wood instead of sweetgum pods.

But seriously if anyone has any guesses what it is please let me know. Found in Ohio, Feb 5 on decayed, mossy wood. Galerina is my only guess but idk
