But yes I agree I miss the old tumblr without ads and before yahoo. I think yahoo really solidified the end of the golden age of the internet.

Ao3 does crowdfunding. You don’t actually pay a subscription to the site. They do crowdfunding a couple times every year, and donations are always optional. That way wealthier users of the site can keep it going even for those who can’t afford to donate.

I know now with “X” advertisers are pulling out but that is more due to Elon than anything.

I wonder how it will be too. I’ve seen sites last solely on user funding like ao3 and have been around for yrs. Maybe tumblr was a 2013 problem because twitter and even Reddit have whole sections dedicated to porn and people in the industry yet are still on the App Store and have advertisers.

This was also post yahoo acquisition. Ads appeared a year before yahoo acquired it. In 2013 yahoo ramped up advertisements. Tumblr originally did not rely on advertisement, because David Karp wasn’t a fan. As much as people left because of the bans, they also left because of yahoo

CSAM is a HUGE issue on both Facebook and instagram. Yet they’re still on the app stores. Most social media sites are terrible at regulating it.

CSAM is VERY different than adult explicit content. Either way, users left because of the removal of adult content, not because of advertisers pulling out or its removal of the App Store. I was there when it happened and peoples reasoning was because of the explicit content bans.
