Science and politics and stuff, calling out crap science reporting. Structural biologist @cmd.ox.ac.uk. Working on Alzheimer's. Views own.
Mel Stride is telling @bbclaurak.bsky.social that the government spend £12b a year on benefits where at least one person in the household is an immigrant. Ignoring the generalisation and the demonisation of immigrants, the budget is £1.3t. That's less than 1%.

A great example of nominative determinism on BBC Breakfast.

At what point does "Chicken and sweetcorn soup" stop being chicken and sweetcorn soup?

This is 21% sweetcorn and 5% chicken. Potato and onion are higher on the list of ingredients than chicken. The tiny bits of chicken don't make much difference. It's clearly just a sales tactic.

I've often wondered if there's a correlation between how much someone reads and their ability to imagine what they're reading.

I don't read very much at all and I'd say I'm about a 4. Most books just don't do much for me 🤷‍♂️

"Migrant rape gangs" has two possible meanings.

I feel like the BBC have forgotten about something here that caused an economic crash around September/October 2022, but i can't quite put my finger on it. Lettuce think about it for a bit. I Truss that we'll be able to work it out...

PSA: While it was nice (although a bit too salty), this is not a "pie".

I'll defer to people who know better than me, but I don't see how this is teaching multiplication. It tells you that 9x7=63, but it doesn't teach you how to do that multiplication. How could this method be used to work out eg. 8x6 without the answer being drawn by a teacher in advance? #BBCBreakfast

Very poor reporting from the BBC. Someone reporting on technology clearly has no idea of the difference between the internet and the web. The former started in the US as ARPANET in the 60s. The latter was started by Tim Berners Lee at CERN in 1990.

(This post was done on the internet, not the web)
