furthermore, what little contemporary source material that we have mostly comes from cultures that we're actively attempting to snuff out those same faiths. It's comparable to how europeans in the americas wrote about the native peoples they encountered; it's not really an objective take.

I've had this same discussion with internet neopagans before. I don't think it makes it any less valid than other religious faiths, but it's pretty much entirely a modern reconstruction of what people think pre-christian western religion was like.

The cultured shotgun enjoyer. I dont see enough people recommending the pawn shop used 12 gauge pump for first time gun buyers. They're much better in inexperienced hands than handguns in most situations, and it's fun and easy to get proficient with them.
