Nero Claudius Drusus, etc.

Manhattan-based magistrate, concerned with (& quite worried about) the res publica.
Any commander worth the rank knows that methodical foraging in the frontier zone is critical to carrying out the mission. Here, I demonstrate how to survive when reliant on the natives to convert duck into food when in the liminal space between West Chippewa St in Buffalo, New York and ... Canada.

Cold snap here in Manhattan and we lost heat in the domus. Antonia said she'll just have to burn Claudius's Etruscan books again.

By command of Aunt Livilla*, we pivot on III days' notice to feast among Livii (quite numerous these days), despite an overfull Claudian pantry, now to be consumed on Saturday. I am compelled to roast many sprouts & furnish Gallic wine.
(*Mom's minor sister, anno XCIII, still not to be denied.)

Me, reading about collectors having to remove cellophane tape residue from coins with acetone,
... and then Livia gets the last word despite 17 years on the other side of the River...

Project deferred XLV years: ~ 100 JFK semisses soon back in public hands*. Nonna Drusilla's monthly tribute (aka Social Security) ended in "0.50" & she always gave me (not Ti.) the coin, c.1970-80. Keeping 1x each random AR** year + a few others, as Claudian genes are more practical than the Drusii.

On Veterans Day, a salute to Antonius and his 3 brothers, my Claudian uncles (x2) and Drusian great-uncles (x 8!), Dad and Grand-Dad. Between them, the frontiers of Gaul & the Rhine, the Far East, and ... Staten Island were secured (& re-secured).

This person is being nominated an Ambassador of the Republic:

The Nursing Home Slumlord Manifesto - The American Prospect
In a surreal new lawsuit, New York nursing home owners say they make nearly a billion dollars a year understaffing homes and shortchanging patients.

💥As Orbán prepares to meet Trump in a few days, here's background on the next US Ambassador to Hungary: Benjamin Landa, a nursing home tycoon whose facilities have faced scrutiny and investigations—some stories are horrific.

I (humbly) beseech voters of the State & City & County of New York to secure a place in the pens at first light. Modestly (& without Interest), I commend your attention to Alvin of Manhattan. (I withold friendship from the candidate whose father was a vastly more accomplished provincial governor.)

Pleased to report that Antonia's cousin has successfully commemorated the victory of the Athenians. The celebration restaurant is nearly 1 1/2 miles away; I hope our chair-carriers are up to it.

Whilst I watch the NYC Marathon progress of the MMLXX/LXXX age cohort, I humbly call the attention of New Yorkers to the Polls, on this last day of Early Voting in NYC. You might receive the spoils of the franchise, including temporary tattoos & leftover Halloween candy.

In my annual preparation to start monitoring the progress of my friends running the NYC Marathon, I have ordered up extra coffee from the kitchens. A bit milky, as we may all be doing this for a while, they don't run that fast these days...

New billboards have been put up near Miami, Chicago, and Memphis, Tennessee.
Billboards outside US Southern Command urge troops not to 'break the law’ in Caribbean strikes
“Don’t let them make you break the law,” reads a billboard along the road to U.S. Southern Command, one of several set up by veterans.

[Unofficially,] the good people of Novum Eboracum are delighted to reclaim rights to reside in a Classic 6+ apartment in central Londinium. Ceding these things to placeholders is so dreary.

Whilst excavating the Julio-Claudian kitchen counter, I discover c. 1 year of accumulated metal & provincials passing current in NYC, including Hispania, Britannia, & wildly not-worth-the -provincial-effort Hibernia. I may send a lad to buy 16% more with the "Euro" bits.

I am very much anti-thievery, but I do not agree that the Louvre jewel heist warrants "The loss is not only France’s, but the world’s." If I understand the items, this was all newly-made 19th C. bling for unstable regimes. Jewelry is not history and often not at all interesting apart from cost.

Antonia said we were going to see "Divo", and I said, "Which one?" Imagine my surprise.

In celebration of finding, after two months, the already-opened packet of exotic Eastern spices (ex-Kalustyan's on Third Ave in "Curry Hill") which I had secreted in Livia's ancient Maxwell House Instant jar (background, which formerly held her Claudian pie-beans), Antonia & I had the Betz wine.

Unclear from signals as to whether Claudius is bringing in some legions from farthest Hispania tonight, so the chow wagon has been fired up, as the tabernae of Manhattan may not be able to absorb the crowd.

Livia's distant elder Drusillian cousin, c. 1914-18. I'm stumped by insignia, as the Frenchy Preserved-Fish King of Savoy & Sardegna made Lieutenants, Majors, and Brigadier Generals show 1 star. Lieutenant by visage, very possibly Major by attrition rate & status. Better eyes say ...?

On the journey to the Capitol, atop the Alban hill, to secure the favor of the many gods. But first, the necessary consultation with their priests and flunkies in the barren forum of mystery and despair.

As the Claudii attended a screening of "Jaws", I could not help but be struck that Chief Brody and Hooper get loaded on a bottle of early 1970s Beaujolais. What stories could our Antonian Paul Masson carafes tell???
August 31, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Recalling the bare and harsh family memories of exile... the wine is Marcassin, and the decanter is ....Paul Masson. (I think. I don't know how "Since 1852" would fit in the California wine narrative...)
