I hope you're all hanging in there as best as possible. And if this is the end of Drunk Monkeys after this year, I want to thank you in advance. It has been an honor to be your editor in chief. I truly appreciate and love every single one of you.

I'm trying not to add to the email onslaught, so contacting me through social media will be the best way to do that.

We'll talk soon. If you need to contact me for any reason, please do so on Instagram or through BlueSky. We will be deleting our Twitter account shortly, and Facebook will probably go soon too. (38/41)

Who knows what's happening behind closed doors. Certainly not me. But if you were patient, and understanding, I really want to thank you for that. That means a lot to me. More than you'll ever know. (37/41)

I've had pieces that were accepted at places that never came to fruition. I edited a whole issue of a different literary journal as a guest editor and that never went to print either! Who knows what happens in the Indie literary world. (36/41)

I want to thank all of our submitters for their patience and their understanding. And I want to say, if you haven't been understanding about it, if you've been kind of pissed off about it, I don't blame you! (35/41)

There have been many moments in the last few years where I didn't think I was going to make it to the next year. So I'm not going to pretend like everything is better. We'll see, is what I'm trying to say. We'll see. (34/41)

After that, who knows. 2025 is already so bleak that the thought of making it to 2026 is unfathomable to me at the moment. I'm not saying that to be dramatic; it's the god's honest truth. (33/41)

Once we figure all that out, then we'll talk about opening for new submissions for the future issues of the year, including a Pop Culture issue. I refuse to shutter Drunk Monkeys without doing at least one more Pop Culture issue; it is our favorite, and I know it's a fan favorite (32/41)

Originally I had planned to just mass decline everything with an explanation and start from scratch, but we've gotten a few emails from submitters who still want to show up in an issue, so we're going to go ahead and honor that.

If your submission is new, meaning we haven't read it yet, I'll let you do what you think is best. If it's still there by mid-February, I will have my staff make a decision on it and we will go from there. No harm, no foul. We're gonna start fresh. (30/41)
January 22, 2025 at 10:05 AM
But if you are holding on hope to show up in our journal, I will publish you.

If your piece was in progress and you haven't withdrawn it, I will give you until mid-February to withdraw it. If you haven't withdrawn it by then, we will consider it for a future issue. (29/41)
January 22, 2025 at 10:04 AM
I will contact you by mid-February to see if you still want it to run in an issue. If not, no big deal. I assume when I go in the emails, I'll see a lot of withdrawals, and that's totally cool. Your work is always your work and I want you to do what's best for it. (28/41)

First thing is first: I'll have to do some housekeeping. I'll finish posting last May's features. Then, we'll tackle the queue. If you have an accepted piece that hasn't appeared in the journal yet... (27/41)

I'm not sure exactly when these issues will come out this year; I meant to write this and announce it earlier this month, but then Los Angeles caught on fire and I got a little distracted. But we will do four issues, including another pop culture issue.

So here's the plan. I've spoken to the editors, I've spoken to Matt, and what we're gonna do is we're gonna put out four more issues. We're gonna take it in four issue increments. (25/41)

Maybe I will find a little bit of joy again in the literary world. Not enough to ever go to AWP or something like that, but you know, enough to actually get my heart going again. (24/41)
January 22, 2025 at 10:01 AM
And who knows, maybe it won't be a final year. It's a nebulous thing. Maybe it'll be one of those "fake it till you make it", "smile through the pain", situations where I finally remember, I finally find again, what it was that made lit, made DM, so special to me. (23/41)
January 22, 2025 at 10:00 AM
We've been around since 2011, and I owe the journal and all of our readers and writers a final, wonderful year. (22/41)
January 22, 2025 at 10:00 AM
I can't put out a good publication if I'm doubtful that I'll even survive through the month. But I also don't want to just up and disappear, shutter like so many other literary journals before us. (21/41)
