A couple of hours later, I’ve boxed up this afternoon’s degradation and stored it in the room in my brain where I keep all the crap I can’t deal with. It’s crowded in there, but I’m a master at this now – repression is my superpower. Ha! Maybe I should get that printed on a t-shirt. I turn the rusty key so it’s safely locked and turn away, forcing myself to focus on what matters: just a few more weeks until A-levels, and then I’m out of here.

I smile for the first time today when I spot a message from Ben, my best friend. ‘Hey, you. How’s your day been?’ ‘Great thanks.’ Liar, liar, pants on fire. ‘I think I aced my history test, thanks to all your help.’ Lie number two. I’m not even studying history. But it’s fine – this is what we do. He doesn’t need all my shit, and I don’t want to tell him. Not when pretending feels better than remembering. I stare at the screen for a minute, hoping for a reply, but he’s probably still at college – Boston, where the lucky bastard lives, is five hours behind.

The black fabric feels cool and smooth as I wriggle into the dress. I reach for the zip – please, please let this fit – and grin as it glides to the neck without getting stuck. This is it. The moment of truth. I turn to the mirror again before I can chicken out, and… Oh. My. God. I don’t look terrible. I mean, I’m not about to win any beauty pageants, but I also don’t think I’ll put anyone off their dinner. Is that really me? I twist my long chestnut hair up into a topknot and give a half-hearted pout. Some (okay, a trowel-full) of makeup, and an updo and I might just pull this off. I’ll need shoes, but that’s fine, I’ll go shopping tomorrow; shoes are this fat-girl’s friend – they always fit.

This is from my WIP (Deadly Detentions) which I have just started querying. #WIPSnips #amquerying
my forehead in slow, slimy trails. The sulfuric smell hits the back of my nose and my stomach turns, but I swallow hard and force myself to breathe steadily. If I gag, they’ll laugh harder. If I cry, they’ll win. I stare down at my battered converse boots as if they hold the answers to life itself and blink the tears away; they’ll come later when I’m alone. Raucous laughter echoes around me as another missile slaps my face, and a sickly-sweet scent reaches into my nostrils and curdles with the egg. My stomach rolls again, and I flinch as something cold and wet hits my left buttock and slides down my bare leg. ‘Look how her bum wobbles!’ A girl’s voice shouts with glee. My pulse hammers in my neck like my heart’s trying to crawl up my throat and escape. My arms strain against the leather strap, the belt is too tight biting into my tender skin. My legs betray me completely, jerking as though they have a life of their own. The world shrinks. Trees blur. Silver stars flash in and out of existence. My vision tunnels: the world narrowing until my feet are hidden in shadows. Oh no. Not now. Please not now. Dad’s voice echoes in my head: “Breathe, Ella. In through your nose. Hold. Out through your mouth.” I suck a deep breath in, but my lungs tighten traitorously, ribs clamping down as if they’re punishing me too. ‘Piggy, piggy, piggy tied to a tree, you can struggle all you want, but you won’t get free…’ their voices come from all around me, louder and louder until it’s all I can hear. ‘What in God’s name is going on here?’ A man’s booming voice cuts through the jeers. My eyes fly open and I glance up to see Mr Robinson my English teacher making a beeline for me. Heat rises from my chest to my face, cheeks burning. Relief and shame tangle together. Why did it have to be him?
