I know it's often invoked in this way but the question is why, if Marx really had a more sophisticated view in this text, he returns to the other view he always had in Capital and insists on it as if nothing happened.

I see Marx's project in this text as trying to save his idealist theory of history from empirical embarrassment rather than articulating a real alternative to it. Nap III is a symptom of the incomplete liquidation of the french small holders whose contradiction he will work out to complete the state

It is central to Marx's view that capitalist actors are bearers of the abstract compulsion of capital's immanent law. drawing a distinction between capital and capitalists as you do fundamentally breaks with his social ontology. That's good! his ontology sucks!
