Extremely well established research in the field shows that these outcomes are also correlated with consumption of cured meats, alcohol, processed foods, and socioeconomic status. We can't evaluate this study unless we know if and how these confounding variables were controlled for.

Yep. Science journalism is notoriously bad at communicating the results of a study. Look at the reference to the big study, they found a correlation to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Great, how do we know this is caused by emulsifiers?
