#TombTuesday A fitting place for the dead 💀: an early Bronze Age cairn- possibly the furthest west on the British mainland - sited close to the sea on Mayon Cliff above Sennen, West Penwith, Cornwall

Built of massive boulders, the central cist has long been disturbed & exposed

#StandingStoneSunday chancing across the Merry Maidens stone circle in West Penwith, #Cornwall, as we dropped down to Newlyn was a real delight.

Heaven knows how this perfect circle has survived 4500 years of landscape change since the Late Neolithic/early Bronze Age 🥰

Diodorus Siculus (60-30BC); ‘The inhabitants of Britain who live on the promontory called Belerion [Cornwall] are friendly to strangers.. they work the tin… and convey it to an island.. called Ictis… (where) the merchants buy the tin from the natives

#TombTuesday one of the mighty (they are huge!) coastal barrows dominating the north coast of Cornwall at Newquay

This one was enclosed - & no doubt revered - by Trevelgue Head coastal promontory fort, while several others stand nearby. A number were lost during C19th improvements 😟

It's #StandingStoneSunday 🥳 The triple stone alignment of Harold's Stones, Trellech, is depicted as a relief carving on Lady Probert's sundial of 1689, now in the local church

This shows the stones have barely changed in 3 centuries 😮

A week ago, climbing to the summit of Pen y Pass below Snowdon on the 41st Marathon Eryri. Hugely enjoyable, but I'm very glad I don't have to run 26.2 miles again this morning! 😄🫣

No doubt I'll be back next year 🤞

#FindsFriday out in Trellech, Monmouthshire yesterday on fieldwork with Churchill Archaeology in the landscape around the famous Harold's Stones stone row.

..and we stumbled across a prone cupmarked slab which echoes the prominent pair of cupmarks on the cylindrical central stone 👍👌

The historic Vivian Slate Quarry in Llanberis, Gwynedd, rises out of dense autumn woodland with its narrow galleries visible 😮🍂

Now a scheduled monument, the quarry forms part of the Welsh Slate World Heritage Landscape

Llywelyn ab Iorwerth's mighty C13th castle at Dolbadarn, Llanberis, watched over us yesterday as I ran my first Marathon Eryri

One of the toughest marathons in the world, the route delivered over 26.2 miles with 2745 ft of climb 😬. The freezing rain was tough, but chuffed to finish in 4:28 🥳
