I'm not from US system, but I know this used to happen at the MLA (Modern Language Association) conf which included literature jobs and some language and linguistics ones. Pretty sure it also happened at LSA (Linguistic Society of America) conferences too.

I hope the editors didn’t listen to them!

I so feel your pain (and am also marking right now).

Our uni keeps on telling us that despite all the staff cuts, our workloads won't go up because they'll introduce 'new ways of working' and I just know they're thinking AI. 😬 (maybe not to the extreme extent as in the article but...)

Just a little in sociolinguistics (probably because we're pretty sensitive to bias issues in general), but in linguistics more broadly yes. There are loads of funding opportunities with AI, as well as people including AI in bids to in the hope it will show focus on current interests.

I have skates (and did figure skating as a child - not much is left other than the ability to mostly not crash) but have been twice in ten years here.
