It’s not a bureaucratic reshuffle, it's a deliberate effort to replace humanitarian aid with private sector investments that benefit hedge funds, institutional investors, and Trump’s billionaire golf buddies.

To do that, we must emphasize the immediate, life saving impact of USAID’s programs and all the good it does.

We can recognize the harms caused, while also working towards improved models of develop’t and global health that are rooted in anti-capitalist principles. But that’s tomorrow’s fight. Right now, we must fight as hard as we can for this important work to continue.

There are some on the left celebrating USAID’s demise. I find this shortsighted and callous. Dismantling USAID rapidly, w/o viable alternatives in place, will have devastating impacts. Millions rely on USAID-funded programs. Cutting off this support will lead to preventable deaths and suffering.

On one hand, we know that USAID is a tool of soft power that reinforces the structures of capitalist exploitation and imperialism. On the other hand, it’s currently one of the few mechanisms we have to deliver life saving resources and expertise to the communities who need them

I think many of us in this field recognize that USAID is an incredibly contradictory institution. And I feel like I’m constantly grappling with
how to reconcile these contradictions.
