These two types of competition (kin and interspecies) may work together to tune signal sensitivity.
Using quorum sensing in Pseudomonas aeruignosa, we find signal sensitivity impacts the timing and level of gene activation. Signal hypersensitivity results in a defect in kin competition while hyposensitivity reduces fitness during interspecies competition.
