We absolutely need more compassion, selflessness and other-centered behavior.
More charity and less greed. Yes! And we need leaders to model these things. But we don't have to bash The Enlightenment to accomplish that, or individualism.

Interesting read. Brooks' conservative communitarian leanings shine through. The Enlightenment was not about "do your own thing", but the replacement of rationalism with empiricism (and like it or not, no longer asking God to explain all things).

I grew up in Texas, and while I doubt I could live there now due to the fascist GOP leadership and its actions - Big Bend is one of my favorite places on the globe (and re the question, the Chisos Mtns climb to about 8K).

I live in Colorado, and thought Polis was reasonable. However, you can’t really be reasonable and accept or support anything RFKJ says or does, perhaps with the exception of, “Americans need to lose weight” (which my mother-in-law also says, but she doesn’t run HHS).
