I am not concise
One of the things I have noticed is that the best leaders look like they are doing nothing. They look like they are doing nothing because they take their time and spend their time making sure that everybody on their team has what they need to be successful. #talent #leadership

If you are a leader and you are avoiding conflict in your team, it does not mean the conflict goes away. It means the people that report to you and the people that work for you are having to deal with the conflict that you are not dealing with. #leadership #conflict

As a leader, it is important to understand that your people are not you. The things that helped you be successful are not necessarily the things that are going to help your people be successful. #leadership #talent

We tend to think about leadership as a privilege and reward. Start thinking about leadership as a responsibility. Leadership is not about what your people can do for you. It is about how you help your people be effective, removing obstacles, providing resources, & accountability. #leadership #talent

There’s an amazing error known as the fundamental attribution error. This error states that when we do something that is wrong or bad, we attribute it to contextual things. But when somebody else does something bad or wrong, we attribute it to mean something about them. #errors #leadership #talent

One of the things that rises to the top of my gratitude list are the people that I've worked with and who have helped me develop throughout my career, particularly clients, mentors, supervisors, everybody who has really helped me grow as a person and professionally. #leadership #talent #dignity

One easy tip for improving engagement for your people is simply to talk about them behind their back. When somebody that works for you or works with you does something that you think is amazing, tell somebody else about it. #leadership #tips #talent

Last time, I was talking about the importance of positive reinforcement. Actually ran into a real world example of this recently. I had to get a root canal retreated. Now I don’t recommend that you do this recreationally, but of course sometimes it’s actually needed. #leadership #talent

When we talk about the importance of feedback, we are often talking about the importance of critical or developmental feedback, but you can’t ever forget how critical it is to give somebody positive feedback as well. #accountability #praise #feedback #talent #leadership

One final point on the Pygmalion effect. Understanding the Pygmalion effect sheds some light on what happens in workplaces where leaders are leading people who are different from them. #leadership #talent #dei

Continuing our discussion on the power of self-efficacy, the Pygmalion effect has a companion effect: the Galatea effect. And the Galatea effect is all about how when you believe in yourself, you are more effective and your performance is better. #leadership #selfefficacy #talent

In my field, there’s something that’s called the Pygmalion effect. This effect doesn’t generalize in all situations and in all contexts, but it highlights how critical it is for us to see the best in other people, which has really profound implications for leadership. #leadership #efficacy #talent

One barrier I see to effective leadership is leaders often just do. When a task comes in, ask yourself, does it need to be me that does this? Can it be done by someone else? Many of the tasks on your plate could likely be done by someone else with the right resources.

Delegation should not be micromanaging, but rather clarity. It is not you hovering over people to make sure that they’re doing things one way. It is assigning a goal and making sure that they have the resources they need to be successful in pursuing that goal.

When you do not hold your people accountable, your best employees pick up their slack. They end up doing more work, and feeling underappreciated, and you are more likely to lose them. #talent #leadership #accountability #team

A word on accountability. Accountability is not punishment, it is clarity. Accountability is about having responsibility for behaviors and outcomes. It is not a one-time event. Accountability done right is actually its own form of support.

Leadership requires both accountability and resources. Only positive reinforcement does not yield results and only accountability does not give you engaged workers.

Excellent leadership requires excellent delegation. Delegation requires that you provide the goal, and then clarity, and then resources. It is not you and somebody else separately. It is you walking alongside the person you delegated work to. #talent #leadership #delegation

New leaders rising from doing to leading may find themselves challenged as they move from what might be a comfortable place in the day-to-day to a long-term big picture perspective that requires them to shift the way they’re using their minds. #leadership #strategy

Before you become a leader, your job is to get the work done. When you become a leader, you need to think bigger picture, strategically, and help others keep their eyes on the goal. This can be a challenge for people who are used to doing rather than driving the work. #leadership #strategy

As an individual, your job is to get the work done. As a leader, your job is to help your team get the work done. As one person, you have 24 hours in a day. As a leader, you have some multiple of that, if you are effective at getting others to do the work they need to do. #leadership #performance

A competency model provides a language for what behaviors are necessary for success in your organization. These models can create alignment across all of your talent systems. If you’re not currently using a competency model, I do strongly encourage that you look into them.

Use 360-degree assessments, upward reviews, and other rigorous feedback mechanisms to help hold your leadership accountable for making sure that they uphold the systems that you put in place.

No system is strong enough to replace real leadership: No matter how beautifully you design your system, and no matter how elegantly you put your talent systems together, no talent system is strong enough to survive a lack of accountability for leadership. #leadership #accountability #talent
