'Well researched, utilising official records and never-before seen private family archives, this book's story is compelling. It will fascinate anyone with an interest in Special Forces, WW2, the Far East and British imperial and military history.'

Here's Joan Speakman. She served in India as a cipherette. After the war, she married and lived in Essex with her ex-RAF husband until they were both murdered in 1985. Her married name was Bamber, and the case has been made into an ITV show.

Jane Spanier went out to India, found love and got married. She was clearly hard working and well respected, but tragically she died of polio in August 1944. There was no vaccine for Polio until the 1950s. Different ways to become casualties of war...

Before going to India to serve with Force 136, Maureen O'Sullivan spent seven months behind the lines in France, from March 1944. She had some close scrapes. She was quite a character and her SOE file made me giggle - a lot!

'This type of biography is important on so many levels; the military history needs to be recognised of course, but more than that, the social history of the early to mid 20th century too. Very impressive story, very impressively written.'

his first born for a few minutes. But he refused. "It must wait Sir," he said. "It's a pity, but she will understand." This was typical of the man and of many Karens'.

He retreated to India and never saw his child, or his wife ever again. Lt. Ba Gyaw, executed Rangoon, Sept 1944

The 420th name added to soeinburma.com/females-in-t... is Pamela Gooch. Married just 2 days after her 20th birthday, by the time she went to India she was separated from her 17 yrs older husband. Her record shows she was mostly ill in India. Fluent in French, she worked for FIC Section.
