@usa-npn.bsky.social When looking at anomaly data, it seems that I should be paying attending to number next to the red box (-9 days). However I do not know how to think about the 'Observed Day of Onset' (Green box). Should I just ignore that number (green box)? Should I focus on the the -9 days?

Helping my students understand the concept of % cover before we go out to the field

@anthropocenemag.bsky.social I saw this cool article about paint. Do you have a curated collection of #ClimateSolutions like this?

Acts of #ClimateCourage can feel like isolated splashes of different sizes. But the ripple effects generate #ClimateHope

Ripples from both big & small acts intersect to create unique 🌊 of action!

An act of #ClimateCourage doesn’t need to be huge to inspire others to make their own ripple

So excited to have @revkin.bsky.social visiting Marist on #EarthDay to tell our students about his experiences reporting on #climatechange & the importance of #SciComm to build conversation & community to tackle global challenges.

Excited to be attending the Climate Storytellers Festival at Princeton! So glad to be hearing #ClimateStories to help build community to find solutions & hope!

“Biochar’s influence on plant competition differs under present and future climate conditions”

#Biochar restored the competitive ability of 🌱 under ⬆️ 🌡️ & may allow for species persistence & coexistence

So excited for this work to be out!

In all of the 🌎 chaos right now it was great to do some #SciComm with @nerdniteupstate.bsky.social.

Being in a room of folks that wanted to laugh & learn was so much fun!

Complex doesn’t mean wasteful or inefficient, it means methodical progress.

“Simple” can often seem appealing but can lead you off a cliff.

…and the pilot study begins! #Climatechange #Biochar

Just finished listening to @fareed-zakaria.bsky.social In Defense of a Liberal Education. Really great read. While I’m still mulling it over, I’d ❤️ to know how he would update it in the 10 years since the books publishing & given 🌎 events.

Really great ideas I’ll be sharing with my own students

Because on a ❄️ day, what better thing to make than two big batches of chili oil!

Hmmm…really?

This is why

It’s Real
It’s Us
It’s Serious
Experts Agree
Others Care
With Courage, There’s Hope

Is so powerful. I have it in the corner of each slide as I move through the framework for my students.

The 🏆 has pop-tarts in it…🤦🏽‍♂️
December 29, 2024 at 12:31 AM
Non-Science Post:

Having a college 🏈 bowl game trophy with a pop-tart jammed in it is really…something.

The 🏆 presentation just said “Pop-Tart Nation! How we doin?!”

The retrospective ESPN special in 30 years is gonna be hilarious when the players have to keep saying pop-tarts over & over again

Maybe I’ll share @adamgrant.bsky.social’s piece & this one with my students

I often use the analogy of the show “Nailed It” to show the students the difference between technically getting something done & ✅ off items on a rubric (aka ChatGPT-ing their work) vs. crafting their work with dedication and expertise.

The challenge is that there are going to be students who legitimately use AI to help sharpen their own thinking & others who will outsource their entirely.

Two questions can help distinguish the two:

1) “What do you mean by this?”

2) “Can you explain how you came to this idea?”

…and finally they can see the system for what it is…
