This metaphor from Prime Minister Mark Carney is so odd. Nothing in the Canadian government is reminiscent of ancient Athens or Rome- we’re a parliamentary democracy! Also, enough with the “golden age of Athens” rhetoric 🤮

If @markcarneyforpm.bsky.social and the Liberal Party want to build a better Canada, it’s time to get back to having a truly *publicly* funded system of post secondary education. As this @caut.bsky.social chart shows, over a decade, govts have shifted the funding burden to individuals.

Proud to represent @uwfa.bsky.social at the 98th @caut.bsky.social Council meeting. I’ll be speaking tomorrow to urge member associations to support my motion for a CAUT Canada-wide inquiry into the suppression of pro-Palestinian speech and action on campuses.

The funding crisis at the University of Winnipeg came up in question period today. I’m grateful to Cindy Lamoureux for this incisive question. Here’s hoping the province decides to invest in the *only* downtown university in Manitoba!

Glad to appear on CBC News in #winnipeg tonight to talk about the budgetary crisis at the University of Winnipeg. Govts created the problem by asking universities to balance budgets with international student tuition, now, they need to increase grants and start funding universities properly again!

My book, “In Praise of Greek Athletes: Echoes of the Herald’s Proclamation in Epinikian and Epigram,” publishes with Cambridge UP next month. It’s a comparative study of epinikian and agonistic epigram and full of close readings and new insights (well, I would say that…). Swipe for a discount code!
