The New Year comes to the Cloud Recesses and Wei Wuxian is drowning in his grief, haunted by the missing places where his family should sit. Years after his marriage to Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian finds his home and learns to live beyond the crushing weight of his guilt with help from the ones who love him.

Written for #DanmeiCNYFest.

Lan Wangji’s presence kept him in the present, but sometimes Wei Wuxian wanted to drown in his past.

He remembered the intense hunger that gnawed at him each day he spent in the Burial Mounds. He remembered the too-thin frames of the Wens around him, the feeling of holding A-Yuan’s dirt-covered little hands in his own. He remembered the laughter and the love, boundless in his life for the first time since he lost his parents.

He remembered the loss like a phantom limb, invisible and impossible to ignore.

“The ghost! The ghost, he’s here!”

The green room door slammed open with a bang. A flood of black-clad musicians pushed against each other to get to safety.

“I thought Huaisang was lying!” squealed one woman, half in tears out of fright.

“I saw him too, Sandra,” said a tall man, his face pale. “He looked exactly like Huaisang said. A skeleton wearing a tuxedo…”

“No one told me that his head would be on fire!” yelled Su She. His knuckles were white around the handle of his violin case. “Jesus fucking Christ, what has Wen Ning been doing? It’s his job to clean up all the vermin!”

Su She grunted as an elbow dug into his stomach. “What the fuck—” he yelled, then snapped his mouth shut when he saw who it was.

“Don’t you dare talk about my brother like that,” snarled Wen Qing, her crimson lips curled into a snarl. She barely reached the height of Su She’s nose even in her skinny heels, but her crossed arms and dark expression promised retribution. Su She shrank away from her.
