Yesterday financial district. In front of FDNY station. Took this person good 30 seconds to circumnavigate this illegally parked car blocking the whole sidewalk

...neo-Cathars, UFO freaks, self proclaimed magicians, self taught orbologists, goths, wiccans, lovers of nature and mayors of small towns where all those weirdos and freaks congregate. Stanley knows how to tell an engaging story and have knack for finding unique people. Not super coherent, but fun!

The Otherworld, 2013 directed by Richard Stanley. Stanley goes full Herzog (but about the occult). This is a really weird doccumentary. On the tin it's about the titular place hidden behind mystical gates and the ruins of castle Montségur in France. But it's also (mainly) about Cathars, Templars...

I really enjoyed the process of going thru old files, audio and video recordings and slowly piecing the story together. Loved the unreliable narrrators, countryside filled with superstition and pagan beliefs. Strong approach to somewhat oversaturated genere. On Tubi!!!

The Invocation of Enver Simaku (2018) by Marco Lledó Escartín. Unique found footage / mockumentary mix. Folk horror taking place in a wake of a mojor historical and possibly occult event. A filmmaker returns to Albania to piece together reason behind the death of his wife he witnessed firsthand.

I just found this in a free to grab pile at work and thought of you and your post about Mayor of Fukuyama right away. 😂

@jrbolt.bsky.social This may be a good candidate for your The Geography of Nowhere list!

Lipton Cockton In The Shadows Of Sodoma. A Finnish Cyberpunk movie from 1995 directed by Jari Halonen. No-budget, bizarre, convoluted, offensive (?) but also charming, funny, refreshing and super Finnish version of Kamikaze '89 where Lipton, a detective has to solve the case of exploding people. A+

Toshikazu Nagae's 1999 - Saiko! The Large Family is something really special. Veronica Addison embarks on making a video reportage about large family living in Japan among fears of declining birthrates in the country. She gets a bit more than she bargained for, or does she? It depends on your read.

Do you enjoy anxiety inducing movies? Boy, do I have one for you! Ronald Bronstein's Frownland from 2007 with amazing performance of Dore Mann as Keith - maladjusted, anxious weirdo caught in a spiral of depression or maybe simply living under capitalism. Grainy, intrusive, shakey shot on 16mm. A++

CGI not getting the the way, Moscow in 1930s looks fabulous. Bummed that a lot of Bulgakov's takes on Soviet bureaucracy and insanity of daily life got cut out, but the ball scene is stayed in and is amazing! August Diehl as Woland is great! Sadly Behemoth is not getting much of screen tiome.
September 28, 2024 at 4:08 PM
Michael Lockshin's The Master and Margarita from this / last year takes sort of unfilmable novel and makes it screen-coherent, with a lot of editing work. A lot of great parts got cut off, still clocks over 2.5 hours. Love different color grading reflecting different plotlines. For book-heads.

Yu Nakamato's Harawata Man is on Tubi!!!! Nice twisty take on short-ish low budget horror movie. Think Koji Shirahashi, but for slashers. Even Kudo is in it!!!!
Tubi has his other horror short too - Ikenie Man, it's good but not as good, self referential and poking fun at the genre as Harawata.

Love that Pitchfork is the NYT of music industry now, gladly carrying water for zi*nist state and being unable to call a spade a spade.

Oh and there is a Kaju worshipping Death Metal band called Oxygen Destroyer that recently released an album inspired by the Gamera trilogy. Paging @jrbolt.bsky.social

Gamera 3 Revenge of Iris. Quite good as Kaju movies go. We at least have a plotline dealing with loss of your close ones to giant monster fucking each other up. Nice CGI (for 1999) and great explosions, miss the cardboard towns of part 1 and 2 thon and the jiggle rubber costumes.

Do you enjoy a bit of Dutch Sicko cinema in your life? Yes? Rejoice, Hotel Poseidon might be just a movie for you! From the opening credits sequence till the bitter end we are witnessing an evolving panic attack in slow motion. Or is is just a dream? Surreal, disgusting, intriguing, touching. A+

Somehow I missed The Shock of the Future (2019), the movie that feels like it was explicitly made for me. Paris, 1979 a day in life of (fictional) electronic music pioneer. There is an amazing scene where a friend visits just to hang, vibe and listen to music together. Shit we did as kids. Loved it!

Decoder -1984 German lo-fi proto cyberpunk movie directed by Muscha and starring FM Einheit, Christiane F. with cameos by Burroughs and P-Orrigde! Einheit stars as an audio "hacker" fighting against muzak (played in burger joints) that turn population docile. Super out there and super fun.
