Fisher's very classical style might be part of the reason for that, it took me years as someone raised on Coppola's Dracula, Sommers' Mummy, etc. to appreciate him, and I feel like complaints about his films feeling staid are common on letterboxd, lots of 3-star ratings. Anyway I love his work now

The Gorgon? Watched this very late on a public affiliate years ago, was pleasantly surprised by how hard it ruled, still strikes me as undervalued

Just like me when I try brushing my hair forward to see if it makes me look younger

The king of Lifetime B-movies, Doug Campbell, had a really good one last year in SHE'S OBESSED WITH MY HUSBAND. After that one I'd also recommend his THE BEACH HOUSE MURDERS. In a similar vein, if you wanna try out some recent David DeCoteau, THE WRONG LIFE COACH is a fun one. Also, MOMMIE MEANEST.

Almost impossible to imagine her today making something as demented and formally audacious as Blue Steel – doesn't even seem like the same person. The excessive acclaim, both mainstream and by the critical press, for The Hurt Locker permanently altered her

I had to lose fifty pounds after a similar situation years ago. "Oh shit, I actually care about being healthy and fuckable again?" I've regained half of that since then, but in a healthier environment 😅

They definitely succeed in making people feel like they've done something. It's the equivalent of putting flags on your lawn or posting on social media, just on a grander scale. Makes everyone feel good, they share "we WILL win" platitudes, and then return to the status quo.

Absolutely; the video game as storytelling medium is intrinsic to that sequence, as the environment, sound design, etc. shift around you in real time, effectively turning your desire/need to explore against you. You discover something horrifying, you can't escape, and you have to die. Perfect.

This is probably hyperbole, but for me the opening sequence, from when you awaken after the accident to awakening again in the diner with Cybill, is one of the scariest and most beautifully executed horror sequences in any medium. Visual storytelling, art design, score; genuine nightmare fuel.

This is why I prefer the cinematic style of old-school horror games over the more functional style of today's games. The original Silent Hill might boast the most ideal mix of the two styles ever? The camera follows you like the modern games but is also frequently "directed" for maximum atmosphere

Once the numbers are no longer absurdly outdated and journalists can't hide behind "Hamas-Run Gaza Health Ministry," people will have to reckon with significantly higher death/injury/displacement tolls; genocide will be become the standard interpretation.

Curtiz is easy to undervalue as someone who made over 100 movies, it's inevitable many of them will be overlooked. He's justly canonized for CASABLANCA, but goddamn did he have an impressive run in the '30s. The horror movies rule, THE WALKING DEAD included, and there are so many others.

I used to consider Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter one of the series' worst; now I think it's a quintessential slasher, which just shows how much tastes change over time, and how the circumstances surrounding a viewing can alter one's perception. It's a reminder to give more movies a second look.
