The fight is on, with the two experienced hunters gaining the initial advantage. But shall such a thing hold against such monsters?

Breaking the silence of the woods, Odysseus made an echoing almost insect-like clicking noise from his mouth, mimicking the call of the Chimera. A challenge for territory, one that no Venusian Chimera could resist, and one that would so infuriate the beasts, that they would throw all caution to the wind. It was mere moments when the two heard the call returned, and they both twisted naturally in the direction, drawing their bows in the same breath, Odysseus crouched, and Cressida stood tall, to aim over him. The clicking grew louder and louder as it drew nearer, the beast increasing its volume as it approached its challenger. To assist in their ploy, Odysseus did much the same. And soon, the lumbering beast broke into their field, letting out a bone shaking insectoid trill at the sight of the hunters. The two were unaffected by the sight or sound, firing their arrows the instant their quarry came into view. Both arrows found homes in either of the beast's forward eyes, the two long ago deciding on who would aim for which eye. Odysseus would aim for the left, Cressida the right.

The hunt begins, and the two paurs of Venusian predators will soon clash in the truest test of skill that as of yet exists in all the duat for hunters such as these two young nobles...

Off of the wind to the east, Odysseus caught the clear smell of decay. Slowly, without taking his eyes on the horizon, he tapped Cressida's back three times, their symbol for eastward, and slowly moved forward. He could feel her move with him in tandem and the two soon found the source of the smell. Pinned to a nearby tree by a spike through its neck, was the partially eaten, maggot ridden corpse of an antelope. “Old death.” Odysseus conveyed through Venusian Sign Language, “Week, maybe.” to which Cressida nodded, her eyes moving from the corpse, up to the treeline, and back around towards the way they came. “Trap.” She responded with sign. “For hunters.” Odysseus nodded, slowly drawing his bow, in with his partner. The Chimera, after being hunted by the nearby Venusians mercilessly, had developed some tactics of their own, ways to trick and distract those that hunted them. Odysseus placed his tongue to the edge and back of his mouth, prepared for a trick that, as far as he knew, only he could manage, and it was why Cressida and he were the most successful Chimera hunters of Venus. He felt the soft kick of Cressida’s foot against the back of his, her sign that she was ready.

Odysseus had been hunting the creatures with Cressida since he was thirteen, she had already been hunting them for three years by then, so he knew the creatures well. The silhouette much matched the shape of a hyena, but with the size of a fully grown lion. By default, the coarse fur was a light silver that shimmered in the light, with the capabilities to shimmer in a manner that allowed it to match the surroundings. The teeth, much like sharks, were rows upon rows, any lost immediately replaced, spiraled antlers mounted its head, fit to charge, and it had two sets of eyes, two on the side of its head, and two on the right. Lastly, perhaps its most dangerous weapon, a long coiling tail with spikes at the end that could be shot out towards prey, a mild sedative produced at the tip. They often hunted in pairs and so, except for the coming of age of a spartan, so too did the hunters of Spitinios, and so too did Cressida and Odysseus in these fields. The pair of hunters, now entering the grounds the beasts tread, went silent. Odysseus’ nostrils flared as his eyes scanned the surroundings carefully, crouched low. Cressida did much the same, her back to Odysseus, and he to hers. Both knew well that to hunt the Chimera of Venus, one must understand that you become both predator and prey.

What roamed the fields of Spitinios was a creature most dangerous, with vicious instincts not to hunt for survival, but to rip and tear across the lands. It was in fact a beast that should never have been in the first place, crafted in a bygone age, for a war that forever changed the face of humanity. They were Chimera, beasts made by genetic splicing, thoughtful, adaptive and extremely violent. Once, there were a large variety of Chimera, created by the companies that lorded over the duat before the Ascension. But in the end days of the war, Thutmose the Wise had decreed all Chimera were to be wiped away across the duat, and that any attempts to create new breeds would be met with the highest of punishments. But at the time, the ruling High Archon of Spitinios asked for special permissions to the newly crowned pharaoh. And for esteemed valor and glory, and at the time the largest dispatchment of spartans, the pharaoh allowed them, in the fields of Spirtinios, on an isolated section of Venus. This gave the nobles and warriors of Spitinios a particularly monstrous coming of age, none like it in all the duat.

Truly it is like speakimg to a brick wall for poor Cressida...if the brick wall also made attempts to hide from her for extended periods lf time. At least there was the hunt to coax him out.

“Yeah, real crazy types.” Cressida placed her hands on her hips, one of which landed on her knife handle. “They don’t just have it out for one uppity lordling, they want the whole system torn down.” she snorted, shaking her head. “Fool headed for a noble to go along with such behaviors, wouldn't you say?” “Shall we take a rest between now and the point?” Odysseus offered, with an eye roll. “My point is it may be a waste of time cozying with the idiot.” Cressida grunted. “I know you aren’t being left with much choice in the matter, but the boy may be getting replaced soon.” “He is Heir-Apparent, few things can remove that from him.” Oddysseus noted. She tapped the hilt of her knife meaningfully. “Aw come now Odysseus, we both know that accidents happen all the time.” “Can we hunt now?” Odysseus clicked his tongue. Cressida rolled her eyes. “Scribes mark my patience. Fine.”

“Cressida.” Odysseus cut her off, turning to her. “None of this so far has been so important that you needed to meet me before the gala. Was there something I needed to know, or did you really drag me all the way to Spitinios for a hunt?” “Column A, Column B.” Cressida shrugged dismissively, causing Odysseus’ frown to grow. “Mostly I felt like we hadn’t hunted in awhile and it behooved me to remind you that to call yourself a hunter you actually need to, you know, kill animals every now and again.” “Debatable.” Odysseus clicked his tongue. “But I did find something that you should know if your Father is going to have you tip toe around the Delcroix Heir.” She made tapping motions with two of her fingers on the palm of her hand as if they were walking. “How do you know about that?” Odysseus asked. “Well the fact that you’re on the guest list, and he's been outspoken about finding you amusing, it wasn’t hard to put two and two together.” Cressida waived the explanation away. “Anyways, the Delcroix. Apparently there’s whispers from the servants coming out of that chateau of him spending a long time with dissidents.” “You don’t say?” Odysseus muttered, wondering how quickly word of his activities may spread given time.

“And you would not believe the rumors coming from House Karna.” Cressida babbled in the impossibly quick cadence she spoke in, “They say that the Lord and Lady plan to have their heir in the natural way. Like some sort of Grace-Born or something, can you imagine?” “That is very unbelievable.” Odysseus muttered dryly, half paying attention. “Oh and then there are the Hachimans,” She continued, either unable to pick up on how little Odysseus cared, or didn’t have the slightest concern. “Apparently they’re harboring a clone of the emperor of Mars.” “Clones are illegal, Cressida.” Odysseus rolled his eyes. He swore her ‘rumors’ became more outlandish each time he met her. “I know right?” She responded giddily, hands out in front of her in emphasis. “Can you imagine the implications? You’d think that Clan would be more careful about making waves, considering how that went for them last time, don’t you think?” “I have no idea what you speak of.” Odysseus sighed. Nothing throughout the whole duat, perhaps all the universe, quite relaxed Odysseus like the Hunt. He was truly in his element, thriving in the skills and way of life he was born for. At one with nature, his entire body keyed in to the dance of life and of death. Even his hunting partner could not ruin this for him, try as she might. Cressida of House Aetos was built much in the way he was. There were few that Odysseus would admit could match his poise and skill, however Cressida was one that he’d readily admit even exceed him in some skills. Odysseus practically lived and breathed in one with the outdoors, many of his skills polished in Delos. But Cressida's family was hard, and she spent much of her childhood going through drill after drill, her methods and skills polished through combat, for the battlefield. She was a killer, as true as any of her house. She was also an inane gossip and was bombarding Odysseus with the latest news from nobles Odysseus could barely even mentally place as they approached the hunting grounds. Once the game was afoot, she would go silent, but until then, Odysseus was at her mercy.

“So you were moping.” Achilles teased, nudging Odysseus' cheek. Odysseus considered biting the finger off, as he stared daggers at Achilles, which caused the other boy to giggle, pleased with the response he was receiving. “So what should we all do in the meantime, then?” Khonsu asked, struggling to ignore the two, while bringing the conversation back around to the matter at hand. “Centie has her gig soon.” Euphemia offered, elbowing Odysseus. “And someone promised to show up.” Odysseus frowned. “I did give my word on that on the condition that we were far enough in our investigation...which I will admit, this qualifies.” “I would also point out, lord.” Kyoko said, pulling out her slab. “That we have continued receiving requests from the Lady, Cressida. She is insistent you meet before the gala.” Odysseus clicked his tongue. “She’ll be attending that as well, will she?” “Who is Cressida?” Achilles asked, attempting to be coy.

“Once we know more.” Odysseus insisted. “And we are properly armed. All together, we have four capable fighters, anything that could endanger their plans will be well defended. I would not feel comfortable staging an attack or infiltration without the knowledge of what lay inside to repel us.” “Shoji or I could begin the necessary moves to gain such information, my lord.” Kyoko offered. “Do so, but carefully. We will need both of you, once the time has come.” Odysseus commanded. “So what, the rest of us are benched while we wait?” Achilles asked, sounding somewhat annoyed, and even crossing his arms in frustration. Odysseus smiled, greatly amused at how much Achilles seemed like a toddler in the moment throwing a tantrum. “We have crossed a great distance in barely any time at all. We deserve time to celebrate the victories we have obtained so far.” Achilles raised an eyebrow, a smile growing. “And here I did not take you for the celebrating type. Considering we found you moping alone in your woods after your title ceremony.” “Everyone celebrates in their own way, do not judge mine.” Odysseus snarled, wondering why exactly he let the boy speak to him. “Besides, the titles were nothing worth celebrating.”

“So now that we have a name, are we able to go after Melina and her pet Alexios?” Euphemia asked, beginning to slouch. “We technically gained the name illegally.” Odysseus mused. “While knowing our enemy is no small boon, it is not the killing blow. However, Euphemia and I have discovered the location of their dirty dealings. Once we are prepared, from there, we may find the evidence needed to end Alexios’ hold on Thivanios at the least.” “And be one step closer to his master.” Khonsu nodded, straightening himself stoically. “When the time comes that he is brought low and in chains, I shall perform the interrogation myself.” Odysseus nodded. This would provide them with an immediate access to any new information, and act upon it quickly. It would also prevent the evidence from being hidden by any other thralls of the corporation. “When can we invade this supposed treasure trove of evidence?” Achilles asked, stretching, much like a cat. “The faster we can tackle power away from the pervert the better for everyone.”

Odysseus clicked his tongue, wishing he had another waffle. “And the identity of said individual is?” “Melina Megalos.” Khonsu informed the table. “I do not know her.” Odysseus noted, scratching his chin. “So either they are low born, or a low noble, attempting to use straters where status fails.” “So do they plan to use the Theseus Company and Alexios to gain some sort of control over Thivanios?” Euphemia mused. “Theseus is a duat wide corporation, providing armaments, war class star chariots, and even system maintenance to some Barriers.” Kyoko informed the table. “It is likely she wishes to have some stronger control across the worlds, and is using Thivanios as her testing ground.” “Or her capital.” Achilles added, sipping orange juice. “A corporate empire buying their way into rule.” Khonsu paused. “Sounds like the Age of Stagnation. Who would be so mad as to wish to bring those bygone days back?” “Someone that could benefit from chaos and corruption.” Odysseus responded, clicking his tongue. “Not all are servants of Order, Eye of Horus.”

Odysseus, despite this victory, felt conflicted. While the Corporate Protection Act anyone below a planetary governor, ruler, or the pharaoh themself cannot openly nor legally inquire upon the identity of any corporate leadership, therefore the identity of any executive, let alone the CEO, was a great boon. On the other hand, how such methods were obtained may affect how the evidence was accepted in court “What did you do to acquire this information?” Odysseus asked, turning to Achilles. “Aw sweetie.” Achilles tutted, though looked far too pleased with himself, leaving Odysseus with a sickening feeling in his gut, “Are you jealous? That is so embarrassing.” “You wanted to know if there was anyone significant in his life.” Euphemia muttered on the rim of her coffee. “Euphie!!!” Achilles called out, leaping from his seat. “That was asked in confidence!” Odysseus blinked, feeling more whiplash than when he was in a chariot crash as a child. Kyoko, who wanted to go home and read, however, was having none of this and sighed. “He flirted with the rather innocent secretary to reveal information they should not have, and nothing more.” “Why is everyone taking the wind from my sails?” Achilles hissed, frustrated. “I did nothing wrong today.”

After the group ordered, Achilles providing the majority of the small talk while they waited, Kyoko opened her mouth to speak, but Odysseus insisted they have their fill before moving into business. About part way through her, admittedly simple meal, and Achilles desperately attempting to feed Odysseus pancakes, despite his insistence he was full, she placed her utensils down and looked to Odysseus waiting to see if he would continue to insist on silence. Odysseus noticed the movement and, his hand firmly gripping Achilles wrist, nodded. She sighed, and began her debriefing. “We failed in our attempt to bug Theseus Corporate Headquarters.” She admitted somewhat defeated. “As I said when forming the team,” Odysseus attempted to display his feelings of no ill will or disappointment, though felt it may have merely came off as tired, “It was a long shot even with those of us with the best skillset for this task to have made any true headway.” “There is some good news.” Khonsu mentioned. “Achilles was able to charm the identity of the CEO from the secretary.”

The three soon entered, Khonsu scanning the restaurant and landing on Odysseus who, for his part, was more focused on finishing the final remnants of his meal. Achilles darted forward and slid next to Odysseus, taking a menu and trying to breathe a sense of casualness into the situation. Kyoko, for her part, revealed very little from her expression, though her eyes darted trying to suss out Odysseus’ mood. She approached with a straight back, attempting to show confidence, Odysseus did not look up until her shadow covered him. “If I may get in front of this, my lord-” Odysseus raised a piece of toast, stopping her words. As he slid butter across it, he met her eyes and asked, “A list. Of those whom you think it safe to spy on me for.” Khonsu frowned. “She was concerned for your-” “Zagreus, Hesiodios. Perhaps Arette.” She said plainly, slowly understanding where Odysseus’ concerns were, at least in this moment, in this diner. Odysseus considered this, before taking a bite of the toast, and nodding to the booth, to which she sat, Khonsu after her. “Remove Arete. Until I am positive where I stand with her, you do not get to be.” “I understand.” Kyoko nodded.

Achilles peaked around the corner and looked to Odysseus through the front windows. Odysseus pretended not to see, as he found people got upset when you ruined their ‘attempts’ at stealth. But he continued to stare, pop out of view and stare again before finally walking in and approaching Odysseus sheepishly. “Yes?” Odysseus asked with a raised brow. “You have never held your tongue before, why begin now?” “So on a scale of One to Throwing that Knife at Kyoko how mad are you?” Achilles asked, tapping his fingers together. “You think I would kill one of my servants in broad public daylight for her first infraction upon me?” Odysseus clicked his tongue. “Do not answer that. To the point,” He gestured with his knife to the meal before him. “I am in a better mood than the shock of the moment with Shoji, but I am still upset.” He looked into Achilles' chestnut eyes, that this man could see his sincerity. “I am hurt, and I will require time and they will hear why their actions offended me.” “Alright.” Achilles sighed. “That’s fair.” he turned to Euphemia. “Good thinking, getting food in him.” “Can’t be angry and full.” Euphemia winked, “Besides he’s been in pain for most of the day, feels like.”

“Eh, you never know.” Euphemia shrugged, as she chewed. “Centie seemed to find you a blast, too after all.” She paused, as if thinking. “Speaking of which, she mentioned that you asked her about her deal with Alexios.” “I did. Are you offering up yours as well?” “If you’re curious.” Euphemia offered. “May as well have it all out there, right?” After Odysseus gestured for her to continue, she spoke up, “Alexios was the chief sponsor for the wall's construction, behind the scenes of course, but we all knew it. He is also the one that decided to send the workers and contractors into the Reign Belt once it all fell through.” “Do you seek to avenge those you once worked with, then?” Odysseus asked. “I want to make sure he doesn’t get the chance to pull something like this again.” Euphemia admitted with a grunt. “People with his sort of ambition are always willing to take another crack at horrors if the right opportunity presents itself.” Her words struck at Odysseus’ core, and he found himself immediately in agreement. As he studied her, he considered their mission for Alexios, and wondered if his involvement would truly end with it. He was hesitant to answer himself, and refocused on his meal.

“I guess I’ll take your word for it.” Euphemia muttered, getting a plate of much the same thing. A large pile of toast was placed between them. “Alright well eat up. Let me know what you think of your waffle. I went with just butter as a topping, figured we could go from there later.” “I am assuming the waffle is the dough?” Odysseus asked, pointing at it with a knife. Euphemia snorted. “You crack me up, yeah it's the dough, big guy.” Odysseus clicked his tongue and took a bite, freezing. “What’s wrong?” Euphemia frowned. “Don’t like it? Is it too sweet or a texture thing?” He slowly chewed, swallowed, placed his fork and knife down, and turned to Euphemia. “That was perhaps my favorite thing I have ever had.” Euphemia cackled, while Odysseus began digging into his meal which, to Euphemia's credit, was helping him feel less angry. He still felt hurt, but he was thinking far more rational now. Euphemia patted Odysseus on the back, which made him jerk a bit forward. “You’re hilarious, Odysseus. You should consider comedy.”

“Centie told me about how you nobles make yourselves.” Euphemia spoke softly, which Odysseus appreciated, both given the topic and the space they were in, as well as for his own pounding head. “The whole tubes and syringes thing?” “We are crafted through the Cradle.” Odysseus muttered. “Right. You’d think they’d make it so you couldn’t get headaches and stuff.” There was a question in her tone, that hung in the air, unspoken but plain as day. “Flesh and bone.” Odysseus muttered, slowly opening one eye to her. “No matter what you do, what you hide behind, or how you protect yourself, underneath it all one thing will always be inherently true. That we are all flesh and bone.” “You know, you’re the only noble I know, but you’re cool with me.” Euphemia decided. “Try and keep from meeting more.” Odysseus clicked his tongue, covering his eyes, though the headache had started to wane. “You have unfortunately begun with the most tolerable of us all.”

“Alright alright.” Euphemia snorted. “So you feeling better about the whole tracking thing?” “I would not go that far.” Odysseus clicked his tongue. “But at the moment I have compartmentalized my frustrations for the sake of the mission.” “That can’t be healthy. Come on, let's order so you can get some food in you to soak up some of that anger.” Odysseus gave a frustrated snort, as he tossed the menu onto the table. “I do not understand what half of this is. You said you have ordered from here before? What do you recommend?” “Tell you what,” Euphemia smiled. “I’ll order for you, if you pay.” “Done.” Odysseus said, tossing her his slab, and laying his head back on the booth with a groan, shutting his eyes to take away some of the light. “Should be about ten minutes.” Odysseus could feel Euphemia slide back in next to him. “You look stretched, lordling. Want to take me up on my offer about the pain meds?” “Yes.” Odysseus muttered. He felt rough hands place a mug within reach of his fingers, and a couple of capsules in his palm, and eyes still shut tight, swallowed them, before laying his head back.

They had decided previously to meet at a diner somewhat midway between both locations. Euphemia and Odysseus got there before the others. Euphemia waved to the person at the front, and led Odysseus to a booth in the far corner. “I used to come here all the time, when my shifts were weird.” She explained to Odysseus, as she handed him a menu. “Open all hours, and serves breakfast at all times. It’s perfect.” “Breakfast is usually a meal I avoid.” Odysseus noted, looking at the menu and recognizing very little of the food that was listed. “Though this already seems vastly different from what I am used to.” “How so?” Euphemia asked, her mechanical hands shifted up to allow her the use of her flesh and bones. “Well for one the table is not surrounded by people I dislike.” Odysseus gestured widely, while still looking down to his menu. “Aw I like you too, lordling.” Euphemia chuckled. “You are perhaps being presumptuous with my words.” Odysseus muttered, though with the slightest of grins.

“Trust me, the frustration that ill-mannered man brings me is very real.” Odysseus clicked his tongue, his eyes narrowed. “As for the phone call, Shoji just informed me that he, and one would assume Kyoko, are tracking me, like a tagged animal, on behalf of my brother Zagreus.” “Wait, is that bad?” Euphemia asked, momentarily stopping. “Like real bad? Don’t you nobles kill each other for schemes all the time? Especially siblings?” “Zagreus is not a noble.” Odysseus grunted, shoving his hands in his pockets. “He is technically only my half brother, a Grace-Born of my mothers. That does not keep him from being an excessive mother hen.” “So he’s just worried...about you?” Euphemia asked, pointing to Odysseus with a somewhat confused frown. “Maddening, is it not?” Odysseus laughed dryly. “I think it's sweet, honestly. It’s good to know you have someone in your family that cares.” She shrugged. “You are making a lot of assumptions about my familial relationships.” Odysseus clicked his tongue.

Don't get too worked up, Odysseus, Shoji just panicked. Luckily some people in the group can keep a cool head, although this is certianly coming up in his performance review...

“Shoji don’t you-” The line clicked. “He hung up on me. Never in my life has anyone-” He growled in anger, shoving his slab away. He had to push the anger down, anger would distract him, have him make stupid mistakes. Thinking, making a decision, that would be the smart thing. “Alexios is approaching us, we must leave before he can have sights on us. Can you find this place again in the future?” Euphemia nodded, still curious at what had caused Odysseus’ frustration, but understood the gravity of the situation. “Easily, now that we know where the entrance is, it should be child's play.” “Good, then let’s go.” Odysseus turned, and the two ran back to Arnaeus, and from there, into the city. “So what was that phone call about?” Euphemia asked, as they moved towards the meet up point within the city. “You barely get that steamed when you’re pretending to get mad at Achilles.”

Odysseus’ slab went off, a call from Shoji, who was monitoring Alexios’ movements. “Odysseus, Alexios is on the move and is heading dead at you.” Shoji said, sounding panicked. “Thank you Shoji, we will be sure to...” Odysseus stopped, half turning towards the receiver. “You mean to Arnaeus?” There was a long pause. “Technically?” Odysseus clicked his tongue at the foolish shinobi. “Shoji, are you tracking me? Do you track Kyoko as well?” “No...” Shoji admitted. “Why are you only tracking me?” Odysseus hissed, frustration building. “I am not a child.” “What’s happening?” Euphemia mouthed with a raised eyebrow. “Okay...but you can’t get mad.” Shoji began. “We’re past that at the moment.” Odysseus growled, practically crushing his slab. “Zagreus asked us to.” “Us?!” Odysseus turned, beginning to pace. “Who is us?” “Anyways Alexios is maybe five minutes away, I would recommend hiding, okay bye.”

“Why?” Euphemia asked suspiciously. “Because it is wrong and that infuriates me.” Odysseus grunted, annoyed at the constant misjudgment of his personal character. “There is a clear solution to a great many troubles and I will waste little more time than has already been tossed to the void by hmming and hahing about the why or how. I will simply see to it that it is fixed.” Euphemia snorted, then began laughing loudly. “Sorry...this isn’t towards you, it’s just...in school they make all the famous nobles and kings sound like the epic heroes you hear in myths and stories but...you sound like the real deal. Or at least believe that you are. A true Aureate Champion from the Ascension Age.” Odysseus clicked his tongue, embarrassed by the comparison. “The age of heroes is long since past. All that is left is for people to help other people.” “Put that on a greeting card.” Euphemia joked good naturedly. “We are on a mission.” Odysseus grunted, eyes forward, desperate to change the subject.
