I'm not good at being off sick. Luckily, I have a companion who makes lounging look good.

Taking Geographers to a classic geology field location and having great conversations about rocks and what they tell us about paleoenvironments and landscape evolution makes me very happy 😍 🧪⚒️ Very positive way to end the week! #LoveGeoscience

When you go past your field site for the day on the train into work, and all looks beautiful and calm in the morning light... but you know full well that the weather forecast says it will rain cats and dogs on you and your coachload of geography students when you return later today 🤩🫣🤔😫

It seems excessive...But we bought a loom. And the loom is lovely. The 5 year old loomed a coaster that she is very proud of. Scarves are next to be loomed. It's chunky and they can't break it or themselves. (So far!)

This week, I'm running the first teaching labs on our new flume here at SHU!🤩 Hope the students enjoy exploring the world of analogue pyroclastic density current modelling, and having a go at designing an experiment! #TeamCatastrophicFlows @volcanologist.bsky.social @pyroclasticpete.bsky.social 🧪⚒️

When you listen back to a live interview in relief that you managed not to massively mess up... 🤣 promoting our undergraduate degree was exhilarating! We are SO passionate about our new course - Climate, Sustainability and Environmental Management! This photo shows nervous pre-interview smiles! 🌱⚒️🌍🧪

#VolcanoMonday is on Bluesky and I am so happy! 🧪 ⚒️ Here's a picture of my excited little face after seeing the Geldingadalir crater for the first time in Iceland this year. Complete with still-warm lava field steaming in the rain & woolly volcano hat knitted by the wonderful @shulizl.bsky.social 😀

At the Geological Society in London for the annual council strategy meeting, and it's very positive- lots of new and exciting progress- the new leadership within the society are doing great things, as are the staff 👏 and enjoyed being shown some of the education team resources!🦖⚒️🧪

Sharing your very favourite places in the whole world with your favourite people is the best.

Growing up here made me so passionate about nature and about how the Earth works. It made me want to understand tides, beaches, cliffs, rocks, processes! ⚒️😍

I've taken up guitar again recently- I'm mediocre at best, but it's been great for finding better work/family time/me time balance..the more I talk about it, the more I find other academics who are secret musicians!

So #AcademicSky, let me know, do you play an instrument? What music do you love? 🧪⚒️

Amazing day with the Catastrophic Flows team and colleagues at National Oceanography Centre discussing ocean-entering pyroclastic density currents! Great to visit the NERC core store- these beauties were laid down by volcanic flows into the sea, then captured by deep ocean drilling! 🧪⚒️ #AcademicSky

My 6 year old nephew made me a card. The card itself was blowing my mind, but what was even better was the delight he took in describing it to me (the glitter is the ash coming out, the red parts are very hot, the dots are rocks!) Children's imagination+science+art= a beautiful combination!🧪⚒️#SciArt

Today I wrote the first 1200 words of a paper that's been on my desk for 10 years...felt like a big mental health win. Was going to work into eve but have to break that habit... so listened to music on a beaut Peak District jog instead 😍 How can I keep this up in term time?! #AcademicSky

Academia is hard. But if I can grow a single cauliflour larger than my children's heads each summer, then I think I can survive it. The sheer pride of finally growing brassica after years of trying... I will return to the glory of this post in the pit of marking despair in 4 months time 🤣

I'm jaded by Twitter- many people I admire are joining Bluesky so thought I would too- hello world! Follow me for posts about sustainable & equitable Geoscience, explosive volcanism and its hazards, and the perils and joys of academia- although recently I have mostly been enjoying some summer rest!
