Yes I think that’s right, broadly speaking. A confluence of many factors (as explored in the article) including generational ones. Buxton’s a fairly well healed area so doesn’t fit the ‘left behind’ stereotype. Reform essentially replacing the Tories there, I guess.

Obviously none of this is in the HE white paper, alongside heaps of other relatively ‘easy win’ stuff that would give the sector breathing space and a fighting chance of regenerating itself. Really maddening stuff…

2) stop needlessly restricting overseas student visas. Stop it! Step away from the policy levers! It’s damaging to the sector, the economy and serving no purpose other than to ‘look tough’ on immigration. Does it even win you votes? No!
